I want to share an inspiring initiative that is close to my heart: one that focuses on heart disease in women! ❣ Did you know that men make up 85% of participants in cardiovascular research? This means there is a significant gap in our understanding of women's heart health! The science has recently discovered that women with coronary artery disease often present with non-typical symptoms like abdominal pain and headaches! And that risk factors such as diabetes, inflammation, and smoking play a larger role in developing heart disease for women than for men! As a result, existing risk assessment tools for coronary artery disease often fall short for women, highlighting the need for more research in this field. Besides research, we also need initiatives that make a tangible impact in our communities. One of the most inspiring people I have met in this field is Dr. Judy Luu, a clinician-scientist dedicated to studying cardiovascular disease in women. Judy Luu founded the POWER Hub, supported by the Fondation du Centre universitaire de santé McGill / McGill University Health Centre Foundation, to empower women to mitigate their cardiovascular risk factors by increasing awareness and improving access to care, especially for those from disadvantaged groups. I am honoured to have worked with Judy over the past few years at CMR research and to be part of the POWER Hub team. As an impact entrepreneur, I believe that to maximize social impact, we must thoroughly understand and engage with our communities. The POWER Hub is a space where I can contribute through my medical and research background, while also gaining deeper insights into the challenges women face in their cardiovascular health. These pictures were taken at our recent event on July 6th, 2024, where we hosted educational sessions and blood pressure stations for women from Caribbean communities.
