Are Gold Mining Shares Undervalued? The consensus projection for long-term gold prices is that prices will trend lower relative to the current spot price of about $2,400 per ounce. Maria Smirnova, Senior Portfolio Manager, Sprott Asset Management – Sub-Advisor to Ninepoint’s Precious Metals Funds – believes this view doesn't take in the breadth of potential market risks and can only be explained by complacency in the financial markets and in the media. Continuing signs of recession, equity market overvaluation and concentration, adverse geopolitical developments, and worsening U.S. credit all point to the possibility of upward pressure on the price of gold. Combined with central banks in emerging markets, like China, continuing to buy precious metals in an effort to become less dependent on the U.S. dollar, Smirnova sees tremendous opportunity. While investor interest remains muted in the West, if the Fed signals a change in its monetary policy, we could see a resurgence of interest in precious metals. Overall, Smirnova says there is a compelling investment opportunity in mining equities that should be explored.
