It's been 500 days since the crisis in Sudan, and we continue to call for improved humanitarian access and for the prioritization of finding a solution that brings peace. After months of intense fighting, the situation in #Sudan is dire: 25.6 million people face crisis levels of food insecurity, meaning these households are skipping meals or using vital resources to meet food needs. 8.5 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger. 750,000 people are on the brink of famine. In some areas, malnutrition is widespread and people are dying of starvation. These levels of food insecurity are determined by The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a coalition of experts coming from UN. bodies and major relief agencies. The conflict in Sudan is creating unlivable conditions for the population, hunger being one of the most widespread. Our Children in Crisis Response Fund helps children and families fleeing crises, including those that have fled Sudan to refugee camps in neighboring Chad. Your donation today means more children can access not just food and water, but also blankets and emergency first aid supplies. Anna from Tanzania never set out to be an activist. But now, she’s leading the charge to stop harmful practices like female genital mutilation. When Anna sees unfairness or injustice in the world, she can’t help but speak out. That’s the heart of activism – and the art of activism. Whether girls are protesting for the right to education or making apps to tackle gender-based violence, they’re driven to make change happen. Experts say that when girls become activists, they can change how families and communities see their role in society. Their work can inspire and offer ideas for how to do things differently. But that kind of change takes time, and it takes leaders like Anna. We know this at Plan International Canada, and that’s why last year, we supported more than 17,000 youth in Canada to become leaders, activists and advocates. Read Anna’s story and learn more about how we help girls around the world become the activists and leaders they’re determined to be: https://bit.ly/4g5THX9 #UntilWeAreAllEqual #youthactivism #girlsrights

A true pleasure to spend time with Patsy and Jamie Anderson today. As longtime donors and advocates for child rights and equality for girls, they continue to stand with children and families facing unimaginable hardships. With their generous support since 2022, we’ve reached close to 650,000 people affected by the Ukraine conflict, including 149,000 girls and 110,000 boys, providing support and care inside Ukraine and surrounding countries with our partners. It was powerful to reflect on how Plan International Canada is responding to critical needs of children affected by the conflict in Ukraine, including child protection, mental health and psycho-social support, education and learning, and gender-based violence. Thank you for all you do, Patsy and Jamie.

How did one of the most rewarding jobs in the world become the most dangerous?   Humanitarian workers dedicate their lives to helping others. They deliver life-saving aid where it's needed most—and are increasingly facing fatal attacks, violence, and abductions – an appalling violation of International Humanitarian Law. The UN reported that 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers, and 2024 could be even worse. Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, as we honour the work and courage of all humanitarian workers, we must urge world leaders to uphold International Humanitarian Law and ensure protection at all times. #ActForHumanity

This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all humanitarians around the world, including our Plan International staff who helped 22.4 million people experiencing crises in communities around the world. Humanitarians provide lifesaving support and protection when and where it’s needed most. They go above and beyond to help others, sometimes even putting themselves at risk. And sometimes, violent actors target them specifically because they help others. Targeting humanitarian workers is a violation of international humanitarian law and it must stop. Ever try learning math equations right before lunchtime while your stomach is growling? Distracting, right? In Jenadia’s town in Timor-Leste, this is enough to stunt many children’s growth, and their learning. “We are unable to focus in school because of the lack of healthy food,” Jenadia says. So, students miss class, she says, and don’t learn basic skills like reading and writing. Timor-Leste has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world, with nearly half of children under five suffering from stunting - or chronic malnutrition - and nearly 9% are acutely malnourished. In Jenadia’s community, one thing that’s helping is a nutrition program run by Plan International, where families share ideas about healthy meals that can be made with locally available ingredients. That’s part of our approach to tackling hunger worldwide. We work with families to fight food insecurity with food vouchers, cash support, agricultural training and more. Want another example? Our school meals program in Sierra Leone, with support from Canadians provided more than 31 million meals to nearly 30,000 children last year. There are more than 30 million children suffering from acute malnutrition globally. While hunger affects everyone, girls often face the brunt of the impact when food is scarce. That’s why, with your support, we have no plans of stopping until all children can go to school without hunger holding them back. Click here to join us and tackle some of the greatest challenges that girls face, including education so that they can attend and complete school: https://bit.ly/3AjBcOf #school #education #malnutrition #schoolmeals #hunger

On #InternationalYouthDay, we’re celebrating the exceptional power and potential of youth. When we partnered with AstraZeneca for the Eureka Fellowship, we couldn’t wait to see the creative and far-reaching potential we would find in the youth who applied. The Fellowship recognizes 13 passionate youth who are committed to creating a better world. Their projects include: 📢 Helping evacuate more than 300 citizens from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power in 2021 📢 Advancing action policies and advocating for youth to be included in global climate discussions 📢 Using AI and gamification to help youth struggling with cannabis addiction Three of these youth have been profiled today in the The Globe and Mail 👉: https://lnkd.in/epX_jaAG Plan International Canada is committed to helping young women and girls around the world to achieve gender equality.
