The PPDM Association is the global, not-for-profit society within the energy industry that provides leadership for the professionalization of energy data management through the development and dissemination of best practices and standards, education programs, certification programs and professional development opportunities. PPDM represents and supports the needs of operating companies, regulators, software vendors, data vendors, consulting companies and data management professionals around the globe. Through the PPDM Association, energy data experts gather together worldwide in a collaborative, round table approach to engineer business driven, pragmatic data management standards that meet industry needs. Key standards include the Public Petroleum Data Model, What is a Well, Well Status and Classification, Well Identification best practices, data rules and more. There is lots of media hype about reducing our #CarbonFootprint and tracking #Emissions, and that got me thinking about #EmissionsReportingData. How, I wondered over my morning Mocha, can I discuss #EmissionsReportingData in a completely meaningful way that everyone can relate to? Getting Started: I looked for a question related to emissions that should be answered. And in all seriousness, this is a question worth answering. And act on, if you ask me. Not that anyone asked, but as you read this – do you agree that action is warranted? My premise: Rats are nasty, but we lack proper motivation to get rid of them (alternative POV – they can’t be exterminated, so live with them). I like option 1 better, but I live in Alberta, where we have a fairly successful rat control program. On the other hand, rats have a place in our planet's ecosystems. Who are we to mess around with that? My emissions question: What is the carbon footprint of rats, and does it provide enough justification to undertake option 1? My process: From the question, we logically look for data. For that, I hired my top researcher – Hal (aka ChatGPT). You might want to brace yourself with some chocolate. In two weeks time, our CEO Guy C. Holmes will be taking the stage at the PPDM Association's Energy Data and Decarbonisation Workshop on August 15. Guy was invited to speak due to his extensive experience and insights into the Oil & Gas industry, which will help to shape future discussions. Guy will be using analogies at this talk, to highlight the value of data and the stark fact that the O&G industry can do much more with their important data in an effort to manage and monetise it. "If the energy industry used cartoons to find gas and the only copy of 'The Little Mermaid' was the key cartoon used to locate the Ichthys field, would we just let 'The Little Mermaid' fade away and deteriorate..... or would we preserve that data at almost any cost? Avid fans of cartoons know the answer to that question, but the energy industry still has not figured it out.
