Artists Supporting Artists Since 1996. A non-profit, artist-run gallery in Toronto's Queen West Art + Design District.

About us

Propeller Art Gallery is an artist-run co-operative and exhibition space in Toronto’s Queen West Art + Design District that supports innovative, sustainable programming. Propeller was established in August 1996 by a small group of Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) recent graduates. Their mission was to create an affordable community art gallery for emerging Canadian artists, offering a professional exhibition venue and necessary support in career building. Propeller continues to uphold this today, supporting artists from emerging to established, through a dynamic approach to arts programming, a venue to exhibit art, and education through member-assisted learning and collaboration. Propeller Gallery is part of the cultural community in Toronto’s vibrant Queen West Art & Design district. Propeller actively fosters artists’ creative pursuits by hosting curated, juried, and member exhibitions. Additionally, it provides platforms for networking and learning through lectures, workshops, and artist talks. Propeller has an active roster of artist members who share their creative spirit, and embrace the local arts community. Propeller continues to garner public interest and critical acclaim as an essential artist-run centre in Toronto. Propeller mounts new art exhibitions every three weeks. Our annual programming schedule includes member exhibitions, and Open or Juried Calls. Since 1997, our annual curated exhibition has been a key component of our programming. We have engaged distinguished guest curators spanning various cultural and professional domains, including Canadian artists, gallerists, writers, and critics. Over the years, Propeller has reached hundreds of artists from multiple ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds. Our annual programming includes exhibition opportunities for marginalized artists from diverse communities, largely underrepresented in Canadian art galleries andInternship opportunities for students.

Exploring In and Out of the Groove | Andres Vosu | Aug. 21 — Sept. 8, 2024 | https://lnkd.in/gKS_g_FM Artist present on Saturdays 1 – 5:30 pm & Sundays 12 – 4 p & Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment | Artist Talk: Sun. Sept. 8, 2 p. Exploring In and Out of the Groove is a series of works, which came out of the exploration of working with corrugated cardboard. Years ago I had imagined working with corrugated cardboard. In my mind’s eye I saw a Circle that had been cut out of a square of corrugated cardboard. The circle was then rotated so that overall its corrugation channels would become aligned at 90°to the channels in the square, from which it had been extracted. Then I thought about the corrugation channels themselves. What if I injected paint into the channels and then cut them open, wouldn’t that be an interesting element to play with? Thus, for me, corrugated cardboard as a substrate was not only a surface for creation, but also offered up an inner core for discovery. Plus, it offered so many other parts to play with, once deconstructed. Creating works for, Exploring In and Out of the Groove began an adventure of discovery of how to use every facet of corrugated cardboard to its full potential. Even striving to massage its corrugation channels, so that they would form curves, became my “White Whale”!
