Attended some interesting RAS presentations on the third day of #AQUA2024. It’s been great to learn about some of the studies being conducted by scientists on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Second day at #AQUA2024! I’ve had some great conversations about the future of RAS and it’ll definitely inspire a lot of rich RAStech Magazine content in the near future, including for our RAS Summit (Oct. 9,2024) and #RASTECH25 (June 9-10, 2025) in San Diego. Special thanks to the conversations I’ve had today with Ivar Warrer-Hansen, Arne Baekgaard, Thorsten Vammen, Marie Smedley, Yonathan Zohar and David Huyben. KR Group, a steel fabrication and installation company, has secured a third contract with NOFITECH to provide steel and cladding for the final phase of a new recirculating aquaculture system (#RAS) at Applecross in Wester Ross, Scotland. The project, which has received a £49 million (US$ 63 million)investment from the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC), will begin in the coming weeks. The three contracts have generated £3 million (US$ 3.8 million)for the Newburgh-based construction and engineering business, KR Group, a report from Project Scotland stated.

#Depuration is the most common method to remediate accumulated #offflavour compounds, like geosmin and 2-methylisoborneal (MIB), in the edible portions of #RAS-produced fish. Depuration involves holding fasted harvest-size fish in partial reuse or #flowthrough systems flushed with water containing low concentrations of off-flavour compounds. While effective, depuration requires large volumes of water and can lead to #fish weight loss.

Mark Johnson built a greenhouse for commercial lettuce production in the Philippines but ended up with a #biofloc operation producing freshwater zero-salinity #vannameishrimp, which he said is “a very unique project” in the country. Most industry players told him the #freshwater vannamei concept just wouldn’t float. They warned of low survival rate, high feed conversion ratio (#FCR), soft shell, bad colour, and #offtaste. Then, he got in touch with a #shrimp expert from the other side of the world. Fabio Higa, who lives in Brazil, told him otherwise. He has been Johnson’s consultant since that day. Two First Nations in #BritishColumbia are taking legal action against the federal government and two #fish farm companies after the government decided to allow fish farms to operate in B.C. for five years. Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO) had been phasing out the fish farms, but in June, they extended licences for another five years, allowing Grieg Seafood and Mowi Canada West to continue to run 14 farms.
