Inflation continues to take a toll on all Canadians - but especially those that have to rely on alternative financial services to pay their bills. Shakepay believes that Canadians deserve equal access to modern finances with equitable rewards, regardless of network or balance, and without exclusive tiers. I did not know much about Bitcoin until my husband, originally from Venezuela, told me about its utility as a savings tool, especially during periods of economic uncertainty. Even though Canada is a relatively stable country, there is no denying that Bitcoin is a strong store of value that Canadians should, if they want to, be able to incorporate into their long-term savings plans. This is why we are recommending that the Government of Canada extend the definition of qualified investments eligible for tax-advantaged savings plans (RRSPs, TFSAs) to include Bitcoin. Canadians deserve more options when it comes to their retirement savings, and we at Shakepay appreciate the opportunity to share with Finance Canada / Finances Canada why Bitcoin should be one of these options. Massive kudos to Eric Richmond and Carlo Campisi on getting this across the finish line. In Canada, you can't deposit bitcoin into your RRSP or TFSA. You can hold a bitcoin ETF and incur a management fee, but not bitcoin directly. In the US, you can hold bitcoin in a registered account. At Shakepay were trying to change this. Its time to modernize 🇨🇦's tax rules As most know, Bitcoin is not classified as a qualified investment in Canada, meaning you can’t deposit it directly in a tax-advantaged savings account, such as an RRSP or TFSA. This needs to be fixed. Canada should consider approaches taken by other jurisdictions like the US, where Bitcoin can be held in registered accounts. Canadians can hold Bitcoin ETFs in registered accounts, but direct Bitcoin holdings do not receive the same treatment. This requires Canadians to incur Bitcoin ETF fees if they wish to include Bitcoin in their registered accounts. This structure disadvantages investors. We appreciate Finance Canada / Finances Canada's consultation. Shakepay had an amazing week attending the Canadian Blockchain Consortium's Alberta Trade Delegation during the Calgary Stampede. Represented by our very own Head of Policy, Sophia Cote, it was an honour to discuss our industry with Premier Danielle Smith, Minister Dale Nally, Minister of Technology and Innovation Nate Glubish, Assistant Deputy Minister Chris Merriman, and regulators from the Alberta Securities Commission.
