During the week of June 17 – 21, Tolko employees from across the organization volunteered at the Oti Nekan — an event commemorating the 125th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 8. Co-hosted by Sucker Creek First Nation and Kapawe’no First Nation, the gathering was an opportunity to celebrate culture, reflect on history, and discuss the future — with a strong emphasis on the importance of the role of youth in carrying forward the traditions and rights of Treaty 8 First Nations.   Tolko volunteers assisted with several tasks, including but not limited to delivering firewood to various First Nation camps around the event grounds, driving Elders around the site, assisting at the registration desk and with the preparation meals, construction of the main event stage, set up and take down of large event tents and teepees throughout the week, as well as handing out food and water to Elders and band members.   A special thanks goes out to all the employees who volunteered at the event.

National Indigenous Peoples Day has been celebrated in Canada every June 21 since 1996. Tolko is proud to work with over 100 Indigenous communities across our Canadian operating area, and we have many partnerships that date back decades. On this special day, we reflect on the significance of the summer solstice — the longest day of the year. Whether through art, music, storytelling, or community events, let’s embrace the richness and diversity that Indigenous communities bring to our nation. Let’s come together to celebrate their resilience, wisdom and vibrant traditions! #NIPD2024

Yesterday, employees from Tolko's Woodlands team and White Valley mill hosted 15 students from the Charles Bloom Secondary forestry program for a tour of the mill and our Southern Interior Woodlands department. The Grade 11 students were very engaged, and many of them asked how to apply for various positions at Tolko. Thanks to Stu Morey and Dayton Martens for hosting the tour of the White Valley facility. Special thanks to Riley Kelly for putting on a drone presentation, Ryan Potter for doing a steep slope harvesting presentation and Warren Mayer for presenting on technology that assists us with our planning and development. Hopefully we see some of these young faces around Tolko in a couple years' time.
