🌿 Enhancing Urban Resilience in Thailand: Implementing the Urban Nature Indexes 🌿 This week, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) hosted the Urban Resilience Workshop in Surat Thani and Chiang Rai, bringing together local government officials to explore the power of the #UrbanNatureIndexes (UNI). These indexes are a pivotal tool in measuring the ecological performance of cities, vital for boosting urban biodiversity and climate resilience. Through this workshop, participants gained valuable insights into UNI's practical applications and how it can be integrated into municipal planning processes. As we work towards more resilient and sustainable cities in Thailand, this workshop marks a crucial step in building local capacity and fostering collaboration. The active participation of local leaders in Surat Thani and Chiang Rai underscores the importance of urban nature in enhancing the quality of life for all. Call for Expressions of Interest: IUCN WCPA Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group Chair Closing Date: August 5, 2024 Background: IUCN-WCPA is seeking a new Chair for the Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group (SG). The Urban Conservation Strategies SG works to strengthen the ability of conservationists to serve urban people, urban places, and urban institutions, with a thematic focus on protected and conserved areas and urban nature. The role of Specialist Group Chair is a volunteer position typically held for a period of up to 4-years between World Conservation Congresses. The off-cycle appointment of this SG Chair will be until the next World Conservation Congress in October 2025, with the possibility of extension into the next quadrennial. Role: The Chair of the Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group will adhere to the WCPA Specialist Group and Task Force Terms of Reference. Specific tasks for this Specialist Group chair include the following:  Lead the SG in developing strategies and best practices for urban conservation  Collaborate with global experts to integrate biodiversity, protected areas, and OECMs into city planning Represent the WCPA in discussions with international organizations, city planners, and policymakers on issues pertaining to urban protected and conserved areas Provide technical and scientific advice on urban conservation on behalf of WCPA Continue building out and engaging with a robust network of urban conservation experts and SG members Draft publications, policy recommendations, and communications outputs on urban conservation for WCPA, in consultation with the Commission Chair Report on the activities of the SG to the WCPA Chair’s office  Participate in relevant WCPA meetings and events Requirements: Extensive experience in urban conservation, protected and conserved areas, and related fields Proven track record of leadership and collaboration in international conservation efforts Commitment to advancing urban conservation and integrating it into global conservation priorities Commitment to administering the SG on a voluntary basis including holding regular meetings with SG members, ensuring consistent communications with SG members and Commission leaders, and reporting on the activities of the group Applications: To apply for this role, please submit an updated CV and a brief Expression of Interest (maximum 1 page) to [email protected] with the subject line "WCPA Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group Chair."
