After working as a nurse and nurse educator for over ten years, University of Victoria PhD graduate Blythe Bell says anti-racist training should be part of the core BC nursing curriculum. “Whatever perspective that has kept some of this critical content out of the early years of nursing education is problematic." She was recently honoured with an Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award from the UVic Faculty of Education. 📌 Read her story: https://lnkd.in/gRfVV9k3 #nursing #nursingeducation #education #research #antiracism

🎤 Student interview! Early-career teacher Aeryn Bannister is advocating for unstructured K-12 learning where failure is planned, and students follow their curiosities rather than a set-subject curriculum. “To do something well, you need to be willing to fail. Ninety percent of a scientist’s hypotheses will not pan out. Most of an artist’s sketches will not become paintings. The practice of failure is integral to many different fields, yet we don’t give learners a chance to build those skills.” Read our interview with Aeryn: https://lnkd.in/g868dMfk

UVic continuing Studies: Depth Education Course This advanced course is for individuals who have completed "Facing Human Wrongs 2.0: Climate, Complexity, and Relational Accountability" and wish to learn about how to design depth education experiences in their professional contexts. Unlike mastery education, depth education does not predetermine what learners should think or do. Instead, it supports participants in navigating volatility, complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity by expanding their capacity to hold space for a multiplicity of perspectives, paradoxical claims, and conflictual relationships without feeling overwhelmed or immobilized. At its heart, depth education fosters the development of contextual judgment while issuing a call for emotional sobriety, relational maturity, intellectual discernment, and intergenerational responsibility. Duration: Three weeks Format: Asynchronous weekly readings and invitations, with a synchronous seminar on Saturdays from 10 AM to 12 PM PDT. Dates: The course starts on July 28, with online seminars on August 3, 10 and 17 (10 am-12 pm PDT) Learning Objectives: Distinguish Between Mastery and Depth Education: Understand the differences between mastery-oriented and depth-oriented inputs, questions, evaluation and feedback. Design Depth Learning Experiences: Learn to create educational experiences using a depth education approach. Apply Regenerative Inquiry Principles: Implement principles of regenerative inquiry within professional contexts. Methodology: This course invites participants to consider learning designs that can support expanding the capacity of those they work with to practice: Contextual Judgment: Expanding the capacity to make decisions based on contextual flows and relationships rather than predetermined methods and outcomes. Emotional Sobriety: Cultivating the disposition to stay grounded and present in the face of complexity, difficulty and emotional challenges. Relational Maturity: Building responsible relationships that recognize and address systemic neglect, harm and complicity. Intellectual Discernment: Sharpening the ability to critically discern, evaluate and navigate complex information and perspectives. Intergenerational Responsibility: Tracing the historical imprints and the the long-term implications of actions and decisions, embracing the need to correct ancestral mistakes and considering obligations to future generations. Instructor: Vanessa Andreotti Registration opens on June 21. I will add the link as a comment when the registration page opens. Pre-requisite: completion of Facing Human Wrongs 2.0 - If you have not yet completed this course, there are still a few spots in the summer cycle starting on June 17 with registrations open here: https://lnkd.in/gJDkASDu #ProfessionalDevelopment #DepthEducation #HospicingModernity

The science on VR fitness is in! A groundbreaking study led by Dr. Ryan Rhodes his team out of the University of Victoria's Behavioural Medicine Lab confirms that the average VR workout using fitness app Supernatural qualifies as vigorous physical activity. 🏃 Supernatural’s VR boxing exercises were part of a recent UVic study published in JMIR Serious Games that measures how well VR fitness apps impact a person’s mood. Over two sessions, 24 individuals engaged with two different modes the app. Measures of physical activity/fitness were taken including heart rate, calories burned and mood changes. The results show that the VR app can serve as an effective form of physical activity, with similar results to that of running or completing a high-intensity interval workout, with potential benefits for both mental and physical health. 📈 🔗 Discover the science behind the study and learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdN8Hup9
