Last fall, with support from Government of British Columbia, our executive team at Voices of Muslim Women Foundation led a pivotal community engagement session to address systemic racism, healing programs and government accountability. It was profound to see the lived experiences of Muslim women reflected in the engagement report. This month, BC has taken a significant step forward by passing the the Anti-Racism Act, which is designed to take action on systemic racism uncovered through race-based data collection and lived experiences of Indigenous and racialized communities. Attorney General, Niki Sharma said, “This historic legislation is about changing the system and making sure everyone in B.C. can equitably access the programs and services they need with the safety, dignity and respect they deserve.” As a racialized British Columbian, I am eager to see the commitments made come to fruition. nə́c’aʔmat ct (Musqueam for ‘We Are One’) --- An all-encompassing thought borrowed from one of her Musqueam colleagues was shared Erin Seeley (she/her), CEO of YWCA Metro Vancouver at the third annual Women in Leadership Program by Voices of Muslim Women Foundation last weekend and it summed up the event quiet well. I had the privilege of co-hosting program with my dear friend and VMW Board Secretary Sana Ghazi, CPHR (she/her). Participants heard from keynote speakers, Erin Seeley (she/her) and VMW's founder Aisha Azba Amijee about their personal and collective experiences in leadership and some key pieces of advice for girls and women aspiring to be strong leaders. The event was made possible due to the generous support of City of Surrey and Vancity. Participants also heard from four non-profit organizations serving women and families in the Lower Mainland including: - Maureen Khan and Tanweer Ebrahim from Nisa Foundation - Nathania Fung, CFRE and Jessica Forster Broomfield from Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland - Junelie (Gabby) Guevarra and Salma Ismail from South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) - Majda Abdalla from Baraza Foundation All these organizations are offering a wide range of services to women and families in the community and there are plenty of ways to benefit from them and support them. "Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much." -Helen Keller
