A fish farm company that Watershed Watch helped to expose for illegally operating on Lois Lake, near Powell River, has been fined $350,000 in a B.C. court. The semi-closed containment facility was plagued with problems, including escapes of its fish into the lake, creating problems for native species. New research finds gravel mining on the Vedder River has adverse effects on salmon habitat, even as a gravel mining operation is about to get underway. Last year Watershed Watch raised the alarm about gravel mining during a pink spawning year and the extraction was cancelled after thousands of supporters sent letters to the province. This year, the Environment Ministry plans to remove an unprecedented amount of gravel - 360,000 cubic metres - from this critical salmon habitat for flood control. The impact will be felt for years to come. We say there are better ways to achieve better flood control than destroying salmon habitat. Vancouver-based eco-label Ocean Wise has 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 salmon harvested in southeast Alaska from its list of recommended sustainable seafood products.
