We’re a registered charity that provides free programs & services to people living with cancer.

About us

Wellspring Alberta is a registered charity that offers programs and services to meet the emotional, social and practical needs of all Albertans living with cancer – those diagnosed, caregivers and kids. All Wellspring programs and services are available online, by phone, and in person, meeting you where you are or feel most comfortable. We all know how devastating a cancer diagnosis can be. It brings a many life-altering moments and events for those who are diagnosed as well as those who love them. People living with cancer tell us that having access to information, receiving support, and learning new coping strategies is what helps them the most. They also tell us that there are two paths to cancer: medical and emotional. Only Wellspring in Alberta focuses solely on the unique non-medical effects of cancer. In the warm, caring atmosphere of our centers and our welcoming online community, people with cancer, their families, and caregivers can exchange information, develop a support system, and create a sense of hope at Wellspring. Wellspring Alberta is a registered Canadian Charity (CRN# 809013675RR0001) and receives no government or agency core funding.

With school back in session, we caught up with Wellspring Alberta's former Program Assistant, Aliyah, to learn more about her seasonal role at the organization. What inspired you to apply for a summer position at Wellspring Alberta? "What inspired me to apply for the summer position was the fact that I love to help people and my community. My heart goes out to those who are living with cancer, and potentially getting the opportunity to be more involved in providing support to our members was motivation enough. I was a volunteer prior to the summer, and I loved it so when I found out that Edmonton House was looking for a summer student role, I knew I had to apply immediately!" What do you enjoy most about Wellspring Alberta? "I most enjoyed connecting with our members. Getting to talk to them, listen to their stories and wisdom was unforgettable, as well being able to listen about their cancer journeys. Even though these conversations could be difficult at times it opened my eyes on what really goes on in our members lives. This allowed me to build on my empathy and compassion for others, a skill money can’t buy." What’s something new you learned about the organization that you didn’t know before? "I did not realize that we offered in-person programing in the rural parts of Alberta. I have always known about the houses in Calgary and Edmonton, but I have found out that we offer in-person programing in community spaces in places like Red Deer and Lethbridge as well. That is such an amazing opportunity for the people that are living outside of the big cities but still want access to that in-person support. Knowing that Wellspring is constantly trying to grow their support to those rural areas both in-person and online is fantastic and makes me proud to have be apart of this organization." Thanks to Aliyah for everything you have done to provide Wellspring Alberta and our members with unparalleled support! #CancerSupport #WellspringAlberta #CancerSupportCommunity #CancerCommunity

For three years, Wellspring Alberta’s Indigenous Cancer Sharing Circle has been a vital space for Indigenous Peoples living with cancer. Highlighted in our Gratitude Report magazine, this monthly program addresses the significant disparities in cancer care that Indigenous communities face. By providing a safe and supportive environment, the circle allows members to share personal experiences and receive the guidance of Elders. With collaboration from Indigenous leaders and Alberta’s Indigenous nurse navigator, this program ensures that Indigenous cancer patients have access to the support they need, grounded in their cultural heritage. The financial burden of cancer can be just as overwhelming as the diagnosis itself. In our recent Gratitude Report magazine, we share a look into the financial stress of cancer, and highlight how our Money Matters program is helping individuals and families deal with the economic impact of cancer. By providing guidance on navigating government benefits like CPP and disability, drug coverage options, and income replacement, Money Matters helps ease financial stress so individuals can focus on their health and well-being instead of mounting costs. However, thanks to the support of Wellspring’s online programs, our members find connection and community. This member quote speaks to the deep impact that our work has on the lives of those facing cancer and why we must ensure that all Albertans have access to our programs.
