One of the most important parts of the #WorldDesignCapital year is the development and unveiling of the pavilion. This exciting EXCHANGE Pavilion reimagines the walls of the region's border’s "no-man's-land" by lifting the veil on either side in order to unimpeded movement for all inhabitants of this uninhabitable space. Made of 93% recyclable steel, and construction-grade materials from entirely repurposed and often non-recyclable plastic, creator Daniel Ruanova and Heleo Architecture + Design have created something that should be experienced in person.
This morning, we hosted a Press Conference with The City of San Diego at Balboa Park unveiling the EXCHANGE Pavilion. The Exchange Pavilion serves as a bridge, connecting people from diverse backgrounds, inspiring conversations, and fostering a sense of unity. Designed by internationally recognized Tijuana visual artist Daniel Ruanova and Heleo Architecture + Design, a full-service architecture and design agency, the Pavilion aims to unite our community, bridging diverse backgrounds and inspiring conversations. Our deepest gratitude to speakers and supporters Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Raul A. Campillo, Mai Thi Nguyen, Board Chair and Director at UC San Diego Design Lab, Heleo Architecture + Design Studio team Barbara Leon, AIA, NCARB, Carlos E. Hernandez, and Josue Braganca, and Diana Cervera Community Program Director. A heartfelt shoutout to Jonathon Glus, Christine E. We are thrilled to announce the completion of a remarkable binational collaboration Heleo Architecture + Design and Daniel Ruanova, resulting in a stunning temporary pavilion that will feature four months of free programming, showcasing the power of design to move our region forward. The EXCHANGE Pavilion is a partnership of WDC 2024 and The City of San Diego, and funding for the pavilion is made possible by the City of San Diego. Designed and fabricated in Tijuana, this masterpiece was transported across the border and meticulously assembled in the Plaza de Panama, Balboa Park.
