Historically, the wood-boring mountain pine beetle has lived to the west of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, relying on a wide range of pine trees for food and shelter. Warmer seasonal temperatures have expanded it's favorable living range, allowing pine beetles to cross the Rockies and protrude into Alberta. Since the early 2000’s, over 2.4 million hectares of Alberta forest have been affected by mountain pine beetle. Another 5.5 million hectares of pine forests are at risk of being harmed. Luckily, a cold snap in the early months of 2024 induced a high mortality rate amongst pine beetles throughout Alberta. While this has provided relief, localized outbreaks of pine beetle infestation can still occur, resulting in pine forest damage and loss. To detect possible locations of pine beetle damage, Wyvern used spectral bands from the Dragonette-001 satellite to generate a plant carotenoid concentration map. Carotenoids are organic pigments produced by plants that are present in high concentrations when plants are stressed. Forest areas illustrated in yellow below have a high relative concentration of carotenoids. Determining relative carotenoid concentrations using a scalable, space-based solution can play a key role in measuring vegetative stress across a large geographical area. For more on monitoring vegetation at scale, contact the Wyvern team for sample datasets. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

The Lower Campbell Creek wildfire, approximately 20 kilometers East of Penticton, BC, ignited on July 23rd from a suspected lightning strike. Approximately 200 hectares of forest area were burned. Using two of our red and near-infrared spectral bands from Dragonette-001, Wyvern produced a Burn Area Index (BAI) to measure and map the burn intensity. Paired with a digital elevation model, we see the burn area is located along the interior boundary of a valley. Approximately 48 on-ground wildfire personnel were involved in reducing the spread of the wildfire. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

Since July 22, the Jasper wildfire has burned over 34,000 hectares of land and continues to burn within the national park. Dragonette-001 imagery collected August 08 illustrates the striking extent of burned areas (grey) in contrast to remaining vegetation (red). Combined with a digital elevation model to generate a 3-dimensional view, we can see the distinct wildfire path through the Athabasca valley. As an Edmonton, Alberta based company, Jasper is close to home and our thoughts are with the first responders and everyone affected by the wildfire. Wyvern will continue to provide high quality, high resolution data to support wildfire prevention efforts and planning wherever possible. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

The Atoll island of Kiritimati presents some impressive physiological features, and viewing its vegetative surface from space using one of our near-infrared spectral bands creates an incredibly cool contrast between the turquoise blue hues of the shallow atoll waters. Satellites are one of the most efficient technologies for mapping and monitoring any location on earth - especially for remote and sparsely populated areas like these islands in the south Pacific Ocean. Fun fact - These Northern Line Islands share the same longitude and clock time as Hawaii, but are a full day ahead! #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

In the middle of the Atacama Salt Pan lies over 100 square kilometers of turquoise colored pools. These pools are filled with a salt water brine, containing lithium metal. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a salt-lithium brine which is further refined for lithium extraction. The number of Lithium pools in this region will continue to grow as the world demands more lithium from Chile to support the electrification of the automotive industry. With increased production comes increased environmental concerns, as approximately approximately 2.2 million liters of water is needed to produce one ton of lithium. Wyvern hyperspectral imaging can be used to monitor the integrity and contents of these ponds, as well as the affected ecosystems the local communities depend on for livelihood and prosperity. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

More bands than Coachella. 🌈 We’re proud to announce Wyvern as our first-ever hyperspectral partner. Their Dragonette-1 satellite offers a whopping 23 spectral bands, for detailed analysis of crops, oil well and mine reclamation, and plenty of other cool use cases. Task Dragonette-1 directly on the UP42 platform now: https://lnkd.in/gxUt_Ks8 And yes, we know Coachella has more than 23 bands. Don’t @ us.
