About
I am an embedded systems engineer with over 25 years experience in hardware engineering and firmware/software design. I've developed products for a variety of industries including industrial power electronics, wearable computing, content storage and delivery, avionics, high-volume consumer goods, microscopy/metrology, high-density telephony (TDM and VOIP), RF and magnetic/optical tracking. Most of my experience is with embedded system design and deeply embedded systems using 8/16/32 bit micros with limited resources, but I also have significant experience developing Linux device drivers for high speed, low latency hardware. I've worked on and designed everything from tiny, bare-metal software to large systems involving hundreds of nodes in a worldwide network.
I've designed for numerous industry specifications including DO-160 and DO-178 and have designed hardware which can pass UL/cUL, CSA and EU safety standards. I am also familiar with and have certified designs to meet FCC and Industry Canada emissions standards and susceptibility for EMI/RFI.
My primary programming language is C, dropping to assembly language where necessary, but I am also familiar with Python, TCL, and Lua. For FPGA development I am competent with VHDL and prefer it to Verilog, but can develop using either language.
I have developed solutions using numerous high-speed hardware interfaces including gigabit ethernet, PCIe and USB 3, and have a detailed and low-level working knowledge of various communications standards including PCIe, USB, WI-FI, Bluetooth and slower, more industrial interfaces such as CAN and RS-422/485. I've designed hardware and software for numerous industrial communications networks including DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP, ProfiBus, CANOpen, ModBus and ModBus/TCP.
