“While at H Power, Alex was working as a product development engineer, with a special focus on fuel cell design and development of materials for our fuel cell stacks. While we worked on different teams, we occasionally had the chance to work on common projects. I have always known Alex to be a consummate professional, with strong problem-solving skills, and knowledge of materials science. Additionally, he has a sharp wit and overall good sense of teamwork and cameraderie. I endorse his work at H Power.”
About
Thomas Edison famously claimed his success as an inventor was "1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration"; while much of the 'buzz' around innovation focuses on that first 1% and idea generation, my focus is the 99% turning those ideas into safe, effective and successful products.
Having been through the stages and gates of a few product development cycles, I've learned a lot about why designs fail to meet customer requirements. I know that simply following generic processes, "filling in" forms and templates, and testing prototypes will not guarantee a successful product.
A winning product development process requires leadership, and that's where I come in. Breaking down complex concepts into basic scientific principles; facilitating FMEAs, or calculating time and sample numbers required for durability and reliability testing.
I'm interested in helping companies carry innovative technologies through the product development cycle. Medical devices and alternative energy technologies are my primary interests, followed by automotive, aerospace and transportation. I'm quick to grasp new concepts too. I'm particularly conscious of the challenges faced by smaller technology companies, and start-ups, sharing my experience and mentoring younger co-workers. What are the biggest misconceptions about product testing and validation?
Another misconception: testing without predetermined requirements. I've seen a lot of tests planned as bogey tests (test to demonstrate minimum performance targets can be achieved), with no confidence in actual ability, or, tests to failure, in order to define a product requirement. The requirements must be defined in advance, and the equipment left to pass, or fail the test. This provides much more information on capabilities, reliability, and potential for improvement.
