You have a conservative client resistant to change. How do you introduce them to a daring marketing concept?
If you knew that the client is conservative and resistant to change and you want to do groundbreaking work, then you shouldn’t have taken the client. Not enough agencies say no to a bad fit. In the end you pay for it with your reputation. If you insist on working with them, you have to start on day one earning their trust by digging into their business, their audiences, and providing them with actionable strategic insights. If you work hard enough, and show them you truly care about their brand, they might trust you enough to make creative leap. Lastly, don’t ever present anything as a “daring” or “courageous”, especially yo this kind of client. Present it as smart, strategically grounded, creative that will move their numbers.

How can you determine the right level of risk to take in your creative strategy?
I’m not sure you can codify how much risk you should take. I would say don’t set out to “take a risk”. Set out to create work that matters. When you do something that is meaningful and challenges the status quo you are inherently taking what people who adhere to the status quo see as a risk. That’s a good thing. I would start the creative strategy by identifying what is the status quo in your industry, and how can you disrupt that.
