“Bernie was the CAO for the City of Chestermere and I reported directly to him in an Acting Fire Chief role for just under 1 year. I found Bernie to be driven and strong yet compassionate and personable. He gave me the latitude to lead in my own way yet held me accountable for results and progression within the department. All this while navigating the difficult roads COVID-19 laid before us. In that year Bernie impressed me with his ability to clearly communicate strategy and create structure within the City. His knowledge of municipal governance and that of City operations often surprised me at how granular an understanding he really had. This lead to him being a well respected leader and one that was able to bring in efficiencies and ideas through vast and varied experiences. Bernie always respected the human element of his team, he is a family man and connected the importance of my family to my career in a respectful manor. He always lead by example in our dealings and ensured things were done right from an administrative and ethical standpoint. I look back on my time reporting to Bernie and say I was lucky to be able to learn, experience and grow with him as my leader.”
