About

With more than 30 years of experience as a marine biologist, photographer, writer, and public speaker, I am passionate about using visual storytelling and digital actions to restore health and abundance to our oceans. I am the President and Co Founder of SeaLegacy, an expedition, impact media, and amplification nonprofit that serves hundreds of other organizations at the nexus of ocean and climate.

As a fine art photographer, I create images that help us understand the urgency of protecting wild places and the responsibility of being human. My work has been featured in National Geographic, CEMEX Conservation Book Series, and multiple exhibitions and publications. I have also founded and led several conservation organizations, such as the International League of Conservation Photographers and 100 for the Ocean, and spoken at global events and forums on the importance of ocean conservation. My mission is to inspire people to love and protect our planet through the power of visual media.

    CEMEX/Conservation International/ILCP/Earth in Focus

Oceans: Heart of Our Blue Planet, the 19th volume in the CEMEX Conservation Book Series, looks at the many ways in which all life on Earth depends on a healthy ocean and analyzes the many threats facing its integrity and the welfare of the thousands of people and species that live in and near marine environments. • Fresh Water: The essence of life

    CEMEX/Conservation International/ILCP/Earth in Focus

Fresh Water: The Essence of Life is a beautifully and sometimes starkly depicted look at the current state of Earth's freshwater ecosystems. A variety of authors, as well as dozens of the world's most accomplished photogoraphers, tell us a story we may feel uncomfortable hearing: Earth's freshwater supply and systems are in serious peril. We may carry on as if it was "business as usual", but to do so is at our own risk. It will lead certainly to the detriment of the generations to follow.

  • The Wealth of Nature; Ecosystem Services, Biodiversity and Human Well Being

    CEMEX/Conservation International/ILCP/Earth in Focus

"How many of the comforts we enjoy and the products we use come courtesy of Nature's seemingly infinite warehouse of services? Bees pollinate the cereals we eat for breakfast, forests and wetlands purify the water that we drink, and the trees in our yards trap pollutants from the air we breathe. All of these benefits, as well as our fuels and natural medicines and countless others, come to us, free of charge, from our planet's healthy ecosystems.

Although some congregatory species have very limited ranges and occur in only very small areas such that they are picked up through other priority-setting activities, others are widespread and normally non-threatened "common" species that might be ignored by conservation strategies. Although some congregatory species have very limited ranges and occur in only very small areas such that they are picked up through other priority-setting activities, others are widespread and normally non-threatened "common" species that might be ignored by conservation strategies. Nonetheless, they may face significant extinction threats during times when a large proportion of their population congregates in a few sites. Conservation of congregatory species first requires cataloguing these species, and then identifying those sites at which their congregations occur. Aside from trying to initiate this analysis, this book seeks to stimulate further research into threats to congregatory species and ways in which we can ensure their long-term persistence.
