Many are now seeing that this quick response can extend to other crises. Municipalities have their part to play in securing housing for all.     The City of New Westminster has been awarded the 2023 Gold Award for Excellence in Planning Practice – City & Urban Areas from the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) for our Community Action Network (CAN) Leadership Training Program. Through an innovative partnership with the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition, people with lived and living experience are engaged in planning and policy development.

    New Westminster received an honourable mention in the Sustainability category, which is given to a UBCM member that incorporates the four pillars of sustainability (cultural, social, economic and environmental) into local government planning, policy and practice. This honours the work we were doing with our Seven Bold Steps to tackle climate change.

  • Silver Award Excellence in Planning Practice (Cities and Urban Areas)

    The City was honoured for our Municipal Regulations to Deter Renovictions. The City of New Westminster was the first municipality in British Columbia to tackle the issue of renovictions using municipal regulations and is considered a leader among municipalities for its bold and direct action to protect tenants. I championed a bold, transformative Renovictions Action Plan.

    As a founding member of the BC Energy Step Code Council, we won this recognition was for "comprehensive collaboration to develop and implement the BC Energy Step Code.

    This Award honoured the City for our Moodyville Neighbourhood-Wide Rezoning Initiative, for which I led a substantial component of the negotiations with the development community.

  • Award for Most Friendly Municipality

    For the third consecutive year, the City of North Vancouver was awarded the honour of Most Business Friendly Municipality. The City was recognized because of its policy to pre-zone certain areas of the City, allowing bonus density for sites meeting green building standards.

  • Smart Energy Communities Award

    QUEST (Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow)

    The City took top honours in the Local Public Service Sector for its progressive and sustainable approach to the area-wide rezoning of the Moodyville neighbourhood.

  • Climate & Energy Action Award

    Union of BC Municipalities / Community Energy Association

    The City received the Climate and Energy Action Award from the Community Energy Association for our innovative and sustainable approach to the area-wide rezoning of its Moodyville neighbourhood.

  • Community Excellence Award

    Union of BC Municipalities

    This award was for the Moodyville Neighbourhood rezoning. I was a key team member for that rezoning and led the negotiations with the biggest land owner, who had purchased and consolidated four square blocks.

  • Most Business Friendly Municipality

    The City of North Vancouver received this honour because it encourages sustainable design through a variety of mechanisms, such as height, setback and floor area exemptions for green building technologies such as solar installations, green roofs, green building equipment, and increased insulation. I led the Green Building Zoning Bylaw updates initiative for the City.

  • 'We Love Cities' Peoples Choice Award Finalist

    This recognition was in honour of the City of North Vancouver's energy efficient buildings density bonusing initiative. I was the project manager (and initiator) of creating new regulations in the City's Zoning Bylaw.

  • Excellence in Planning Award

    This award was in recognition of the COLWOOD/LANGFORD OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN, which set
    a new standard for subregional planning. I was Langford's project manager on the joint OCP.

  • Award Winner: Residential Development

    Federation of Canadian Municipalities

    Recognition for the City of Langford Affordable Housing and Amenity Contribution Policy, which I had written. Through financial incentives, the City's community amenity contribution policy encouraged developers to seek to densify and re-develop the City Centre rather than seeking to develop outlying areas.

    Awarded in recognition of the Langford Affordable Housing Strategy, which features inclusionary zoning and a number of other policies. I was the founding project manager in setting up and administering the Affordable Housing Program.
