About

Graham Nasby is an industry-recognized leader in the OT (operational technology), SCADA, and industrial automation sectors for his efforts in cyber security best practices, standards development, alarm management, and operational efficiency. Through his work with ISA, CSA, ANSI and the IEC, he has co-authored international standards on systems design, cyber security, industrial automation, alarm management, and HMI systems. Graham has multi-industry experience, ranging from technical to project/program management, in the pharmaceutical, water/wastewater, nanotechnology, process, and rail transport industries. His background includes operations, capital projects, construction, program development, and developing long term technology roadmaps. As a technical and thought leader, Graham is a frequent author of industry articles and invited speaker at industry events.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

• Led development of ISA112 SCADA Management Lifecycle workflow, now used by water/wastewater, electric power, and pipeline utilities across North America.

• Co-authored a technical bulletin published by MECP in 2021 to clarify when compliance Form 2 filings are needed for SCADA updates to municipal drinking water systems in Ontario, Canada.

• Wrote a 25-year SCADA capital plan and SCADA technology roadmap for Guelph Water, based on annual condition assessments, industry best practices, and published consensus-based technical standards.

• Developed new Guelph Water SCADA standardized design and code standards/templates/tools based on published consensus-based technical standards, resulting in 75% labour savings for OT aspects of capital projects.

• Eight of the college and university co-op students who I mentored and supervised have gone onto SCADA, automation, and operational technology careers.

• Fifteen years experience managing capital projects from $30M to $20MM in multiple industries (W/WW, pharma, SCADA, construction).

During my tenure as VP & President-elect (2011-2012), I helped the section establish a new student ISA section at McMaster University in conjunction with their newly launched B.Tech degree in process automation. For the section's technical programming, I recruited high quality technical speakers and arranged plant tours of several facilities. Revamped the section's newsletter into a regular quarterly publication. Wrote a regular column about ISA member benefits, with many of my articles being republished in ISA's society-wide member magazine.

During my 2013-2014 term as Section President, I lead several initiatives:

External-facing projects included: (a) launching a new section website www.isahamilton.com, (b) strengthening the section's relationship with McMaster University, including hosting a student poster competition at our expo, and (c) hosting the ISA's 2014 Eastern Canada leadership conference in Niagara Falls.

Internal projects included (a) reviewing and refocusing the section's programs, (b) recruiting additional volunteers to reinvigorate the board, and (c) streamlining internal processes to avoid volunteer burn-out. I also put in place long-term planning documents. At the end of my term, the section's leadership was well positioned for the year's ahead with a full roster of incoming volunteers.

In 2011, the conference had only 31 attendees, 2 exhibitors, had been losing money for years, and was on the verge of being cancelled.

Revamped the 2012 conference to have 171 attendees, 36 speakers, 15 exhibitors, 12 sponsors, 8 media partners and a sizable profit for the ISA.

For 2013, the conference grew further to 250 attendees, 42 speakers, 24 exhibitors, 20 sponsors, and two sell-out training courses, realizing a 50K+ profit for the association.

I assembled and motivated a team of 25+ volunteers from across North America for symposium committee and program committee. Managed interfaces between volunteers, ISA staff, and ISA leadership, as well as other associations.

Developed new symposium format, business plan, website, call for abstracts, author kit, short course programming, local plant tour, sponsorship/exhibitor program, marketing plan, marketing materials and symposium blog. Responsible for recruiting keynote/plenary speakers and key sponsors. Initiated/negotiated partnership agreements with 5 technical associations (WEF, AWWA, FSAWWA, FWEA, ITA) to support and grow the conference.

Developed and implemented a 5-year strategic plan. Recruited and mentored incoming 2014 symposium chair.
