The characteristics and performance of Japanese automobile joint ventures abroad
This research paper examines 2750 Japanese automotive manufacturers operating joint ventures in USA, China, and Thailand.
Ownership structures and expatriate intensities in foreign subsidiaries are analysed for the impacts on the subsidiary performance. With linear regression models, the effect of expatriation processes and equity structures on firm revenues is tested. Furthermore, cultural, profitability and expatriate characteristics of the joint ventures were examined through…This research paper examines 2750 Japanese automotive manufacturers operating joint ventures in USA, China, and Thailand.
Ownership structures and expatriate intensities in foreign subsidiaries are analysed for the impacts on the subsidiary performance. With linear regression models, the effect of expatriation processes and equity structures on firm revenues is tested. Furthermore, cultural, profitability and expatriate characteristics of the joint ventures were examined through descriptive statistics.
A negative relationship between expatriate intensity and subsidiary performance was found, while ownership structure was not a significant indicator of the subsidiary performance. These findings will be discussed in the light of transaction cost and institutional theory, which offer two deviating perspectives on expatriation processes.Other creators -
