About
Network Greasemonkey, Packet Macrame Specialist, Virtual Pneumatic Tube Transport Designer or Connectivity Nerfherder. The possible titles are too many to count, but they don’t really mean much when I’m essentially a hired gun in the wild west that is modern networking.
I’m based in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada and operate tishco networks, a consulting firm specializing in the wholesale provisioning of networking services to IT firms for resale to their respective clientele.
Over my 35+ year career, I have developed a track record designing and deploying a wide variety of successful networking solutions in areas of routing, switching, data security, unified communications and wireless networking. These range from simple networks for small-to-medium business clients with limited budgets to large infrastructure VPN deployments with over 450 sites. My broad experience with converged networks throughout Canada and the world have helped answer many complex requirements with elegant, sustainable and scalable solutions. In addition, I maintain current CCIE EI (41436), MTCRE, and MTCINE certifications.
Outside of the realm of IT, I am both a husband and father. In what meagre time remains, I contribute to my community by serving as an RCAF Reservist, supporting my local squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

What is the impact of IP multicast on network bandwidth?
This depends a lot on whether the network is configured to support multicast properly or not. If the switches and routers are properly configured to handle multicast switching/routing, bandwidth is optimized by allowing for a single multicast stream to the subscribers rather than many unicast streams. By default, most networks aren’t. This means that multicast is treated exactly the same as broadcast traffic and has the potential to flood traffic across the broadcast domain. Beyond the broadcast domain, routers and layer three switches don’t typically route multicast unless configured to do so, which isolates multicast to the source broadcast domain and requires unicasting to leave.
