    Elements of this project include:
    Systems interchange with AHD passing over both Stony Plain Road (westbound) and 100 Avenue (eastbound);
    Loop ramps in the northwest quadrant and the southeast quadrant and elevated directional ramps passing over Stony Plain Road for southbound-eastbound and over 100 Avenue for northbound-westbound movements;
    Directional ramps in all four (4) quadrants;
    Reconstruction of AHD mainlines (three (3) lanes each way) from north of 87 Avenue to a point between 111 Avenue and CNR Edson Subdivision to create a median that is 30.6 m wide;
    Pavement overlay on existing AHD mainline from north of Whitemud Drive to 87 Avenue and widening to provide three (3) lanes each way (with widening to the outside);
    Reconfiguration of 87 Avenue interchange on the east side of AHD, adding loop on-ramp in the southeast quadrant to replace a directional on-ramp in the northeast quadrant, and adding a northbound exit ramp from north of Whitemud Drive to a new intersection on 87 Avenue (basket-weaved over a relocated northbound entrance ramp from Whitemud Drive);
    Replacement of the eastbound-southbound ramp at 109 Avenue, the northbound-eastbound ramp at 111 Avenue and removal of the AHD median crossing at 109 Avenue/111 Avenue;
    Pavement overlay on both Stony Plain Road and 100 Avenue; and
    Grading for the ultimate stage AHD mainline.
    Seven (7) bridge structures.

The intersection serves daily commute traffic, airport traffic, local business traffic, as well as transport truck, bike and pedestrian traffic. Approximately 100,000 vehicles travel through the intersection each day and the existing design of the intersection can no longer handle this level of use.

    The City of Edmonton Transportation and Streets Department has identified the need for this interchange for many years. The 1999 City of Edmonton Transportation Master Plan (TMP) recommends that the Gateway Boulevard/ Calgary Trail Corridor between 23 Avenue and the south city limit be upgraded to a full free-flow standard. This includes a grade separation at 23 Avenue. A Concept Planning Study conducted in 2002/2003 recommended a split diamond interchange at 23 Avenue and Gateway Boulevard/ Calgary Trail.

    The Canada Line comprises 19.2 kilometres (11.9 mi) of track; the main line goes from Vancouver to Richmond, while a 4 km (2.5 mi) spur line from Bridgeport Station connects to the airport. Originally scheduled to open on November 30, 2009, it opened fifteen weeks ahead of the original schedule, well in advance of the 2010 Winter Olympics in the following February.
    The Canada Line was anticipated to see 100,000 boardings per day in 2013, and 142,000 boardings per day by 2021, but it has consistently exceeded early targets. Ridership has grown steadily since opening day, with average ridership of 83,000/day in September 2009; 105,000/day in March 2010, and 110,000/day in February 2011. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, the line's ridership increased a further 118 per cent to an average of 228,190 per day over the 17-day event.
    Governance of the project was through Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc. (CLCO), formerly RAV Project Management Ltd. (RAVCO, a reflection of the original "Richmond-Airport-Vancouver" name). The line was built by SNC-Lavalin, which will also operate it for 35 years. The Canada Line is operationally independent from SkyTrain's Expo and Millennium lines, but is considered part of the SkyTrain network as it is also light metro rapid transit, using fully automated trains on grade-separated guideways.
