On July 9, Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada announced $9.3 million in funding towards four projects in BC under the Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration Fund (AERF). One of the projects to receive funding is The Kelp Rescue Initiative, based at Bamfield Marine Science Centre and the University of Victoria. The project works with local First Nations to develop methods for culturing and out-planting giant and bull kelp in southern British Columbia. "Kelp forests are vitally important ecosystems on B.C.'s coastline. This new funding will help advance the critical science that is needed to understand how best to restore kelp forests, and to begin this important work.” — Julia Baum, Co-Lead on the Kelp Rescue Initiative and Professor at UVic. ➡️ Learn more about the new funding: https://ow.ly/ZABZ50SzSJg Video by The Kelp Rescue Initiative

Hey UVic Alumni, what’s your advice to someone who’s about to graduate or uncertain about their future? “Uncertainty is so important. It's such a vital pathway to our humanity. And without it we can't dream up what we're capable of. Don’t let it swallow you. A lot of people are trained that they have to be certain about everything, but I like the idea of embracing uncertainty.” — Melinda Bige (MA ’16), a 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.   Join us for Alumni Night in Nanaimo on July 17, with special guest Melinda Bige (MA ’16), a 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for her contributions to Indigenous communities. We're welcoming high-school students to campus on July 8 for the annual Mini-U program. For one week each summer, UVic’s classrooms, dorms and outdoor spaces host some younger-than-usual visitors from all over BC and NWT. A week full of academic, creative, cultural and social activities provides an immersive opportunity for participants to see for themselves what it would be like to be a UVic student. Mini-U is led and hosted by the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (IACE) and is generously supported by UVic donors, who help make this program accessible for anyone who wants to attend. ➡️ See more photos from last year and read why this program is so important: https://ow.ly/ZrHL50SxjiN

On June 14, 2024, the Inamori Foundation awarded Paul Hoffman the Kyoto Prize for his profound influence on our understanding of Earth’s early history. Hoffman has been steadfast in his explorations of hypotheses that other scientists have ignored. Despite facing backlash throughout his career, the geologist and adjunct professor in UVic’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences has made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of global freezing and plate tectonics. “Dr. Hoffman’s immense field research spanning 60 years in Arctic Canada and Sub-Saharan Africa is crucial to our understanding of the Earth’s surface, knowledge that students now, and for many years to come, will build upon in their academic pursuits,” says Lisa Kalynchuk, UVic Vice-President, Research and Innovation. 🔗 Learn more about Hoffman's achievements: https://ow.ly/ZXQ750Sw5R2 UVic Science
