  • Can regulators control Big Tech without hurting their ability to innovate? 💡 Gustavson’s Roy Suddaby and co-authors explore why traditional economic theories struggle with balancing control and innovation. They suggest a new model called "layered governance," where different groups work together to regulate Big Tech. This model spreads the power to control these companies across government and non-government organizations, giving tech companies some choice in how they are regulated. The University of Victoria and the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation (formerly known as Lake Cowichan First Nation) have signed a five-year collaboration agreement—a significant step towards a shared future of mutual respect, learning, and growth. This agreement outlines a framework for joint initiatives, including educational programs, research projects and community engagement activities. “This collaboration agreement is not just a document; it is a commitment to ongoing dialogue, mutual respect and shared success. We are here to learn and take guidance from Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation. This document is a beautiful way of coming together and reaffirms the commitment to working together in a good way with good hearts and good minds.” - Qwul’sih’yah’maht, Robina Thomas, UVic’s vice-president, Indigenous. The agreement also addresses the future use of a 25-acre property in Lake Cowichan, generously donated by Jeanne S. Simpson to UVic in 1967, recognizing its cultural and historical significance to the Ts’uubaa-asatx people. ➡️ Learn more: https://ow.ly/ywTG50SCF60

  • 🌍✨ Meet Felipe Ferreira, MGB '19, whose international career journey was propelled by UVic’s Master of Global Business (MGB) program. Prior to joining, Felipe had already forged a successful career in global business—a dream that dated back to his youth. Felipe’s studies took him to three different countries: Canada, Austria and Peru. “The program was so unique that it provided me an opportunity to interact with people from all over the world in a small cohort and move from country to country.” As part of his learning experience in Peru, he met with a few local companies for informal chats. “One of these chats turned into a full-time paid internship with a Latin America impact investment firm. Spending my work term in Peru also allowed me to improve my Spanish, which continues to be of tremendous value in my career,” he says. While Felipe says he learned many valuable lessons during his MGB, one interesting development was that it confirmed where he wanted to be. “I was already working in international business and it really solidified my career path. It helped me expand my horizons into different careers in international management.” Following the completion of his degree, he was quickly offered a management role. Today, Felipe works in project finance and sales for wind, solar and battery storage projects with a European-based renewables developer. “Concepts from the international finance and supply chain courses still come up today given my global scope of work,” he says. • 🌱 Our COM 450 students recently visited Level Ground Coffee to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable supply chains. Students toured the facility and enjoyed coffee and treats from local bakeries while learning about the company's commitment to ensuring fair treatment and rewards for farmers, a key aspect of Level Ground’s journey toward profitability. "Part of my mission to inspire future responsible business leaders is to provide them with experiences that allow them to learn directly from industry leaders. Field trips, when purposefully executed, are a powerful learning tool that helps build a holistic understanding of the real business world," says Christian Van Buskirk, MBA, associate teaching professor.

  • 🗨️ "Living abroad has been a profound learning experience, drastically changing my attitude and perception of the world and marking the most important personal transformational period of my entire life," says Jake Gaglardi-Kreider, a fourth-year BCom student who recently completed his co-op work term in Portugal. His role in the Sales and Tourism department of World of Wine Porto, a historic Port wine and tourism company, focused on fostering relations with North American clients and leveraging his local knowledge and native English skills to increase visits by Canadian and American guests. Prior to his co-op, Jake spent his exchange semester in the Czech Republic, allowing him to explore and experience European culture for over seven months in total. Despite facing language barriers, cultural differences and homesickness, Jake's time abroad has been transformative, shaping his perspective on life and teaching him invaluable lessons in adaptability and independence. "I couldn't be prouder of myself for taking that leap of faith as I have made memories, met people and experienced things that I will never forget," says Jake.
