ULC Standards develops and publishes standards and specifications for products having a bearing on fire, life safety and security, crime prevention, energy efficiency, environmental safety, security of assets and facilities, live working and workplace safety and other areas. ULC Standards has been publishing standards for Canadians for over 60 years. There are 25 main technical committees at ULC Standards responsible for over 200 standards with a membership of over 400. Each committee operates under a ULC Standards secretariat. ULC Standards utilizes electronic publishing and communication systems to create an effective standards development environment.

I’m excited to share that UL Standards & Engagement accomplished a huge feat in supporting Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations – publishing a set of 17 standards to support the introduction of higher bio-content fuels to advance decarbonization efforts. Our biofuels work in Canada is a key component of ULSE’s initiatives to advance clean energy and sustainability. These new standards will: ⛽ Adjust tests and requirements for fuel pumps and handling equipment helping to ensure compatibility and account for the corrosive effects of some biofuels ⛽ Help ensure fuel equipment is compatible with biofuel blends ⛽ Support decreased pollution from fuel in Canada by approximately 15% between 2016 and 2030 These targets are entirely achievable. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), ethanol has a positive energy balance—meaning the energy content of corn ethanol is greater than the energy used to produce it. Cellulosic ethanol delivers up to ten times more energy than is required for its production. According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, biodiesel provides 93% more usable energy than the fossil energy needed for its production. Future challenges include the energy needs of data centres to accommodate artificial intelligence queries. According to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), these data centres are expected to use between 4.6%-9.1% of U.S. electricity in 2030, with similar estimates possible for Canada. The safe production of clean, renewable energy is essential to meeting this and other increases in demand. Standards are a means of achieving this. Our standards work on biofuels would not have been possible without the dedication of our technical committee members and our colleagues from UL Solutions.
