Holidays on the French Riviera | Insider tips

When to go

The riviera is at its zenith in June, July and August and there are festivals all over, from food to jazz. Spring or autumn bring fewer crowds and more breathable temperatures. In summer, account for the heat when planning your journey. Sun-cream, hats and hydration are essential.

Getting around

A car is the best option to explore smaller villages and inland, as well as the stretch west of St-Raphael. Book car rental well ahead to make sure you have your choice of car and drop-off location. Between St-Raphael and Menton, regular TER trains serve the whole coast. ZOU buses and shuttles serve some inland villages.

Saving money

Hotel prices dip significantly outside of the summer season. Consider staying further inland in the high season to save money. Local produce is wonderful and plentiful – picnics are a good option.

Packing essentials

Sun cream, hats, hand-held fan and lightweight bags, where possible. For the car-free, luggage-storage services like Nannybag and Bounce are helpful. Bring walking shoes and a smart option for swankier dining/bars.

Paying the bill

Most businesses take cards, but there can often be a minimum spend required. Carry some euros.
