Spotlighting the LIFE mission at ETH Zurich 🪐 The LIFE (Large Interferometer For Exoplanets) mission is being developed at ETH Zürich to detect greenhouse gases that may indicate advanced civilizations on exoplanets! Research suggests that artificial gases like CF4 and SF6 could serve as technosignatures, revealing efforts by civilizations to warm their planets. The LIFE telescope will examine the atmospheres of various terrestrial exoplanets, enhancing our understanding of potential extraterrestrial life. Learning about extraterrestrial life detection at NASA JPL 🌌 Two ETH Zurich students, Marco T. and Adrian Fuhrer, passionate about space and members of ARIS just concluded a seven-month stay at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, focusing on developing instruments for detecting life on other planets, particularly on Enceladus, a moon of Saturn. Their work in the Chemical Analysis and Life Detection Lab involved understanding chemical processes essential for detection of extraterrestrial life. Exploring the Moon can be a gateway to Mars but Thomas H. Zurbuchen, director of ETH Zürich | Space says there are also other reasons for exploring and colonising the Moon. So what can we gain from going back up there? Daniel Neuenschwander, Director of Human and Robotic Exploration at the European Space Agency - ESA says there are four overlapping motivations. “They are scientific research, technological development, geopolitical considerations, and inspiration. “Lunar exploration captures the imagination of any young person...” he says and he is so right. This is also why ETH Zürich is extending their space science education and is part of many space exploration missions.
