Climate security + sustainable development for all

Info

Gold Standard works to create a climate secure world where sustainable growth brings life-changing benefits to communities everywhere. Our role as a standard and certification body is to maximise the impact of climate and development activities. We design the strongest processes that amplify the impact of efforts to deliver clean energy and water, responsibly manage land and forests, and transform lives of the world’s poor. We then verify those outcomes, inspiring greater confidence that drives investment to accomplish even more. We were established in 2003 by WWF and other NGOs as a best practice standard to ensure projects that reduced carbon emissions under the UNs CDM also delivered on their dual mandate to foster sustainable development. Now with more than 80 NGO supporters and 1100 projects in over 70 countries, our projects have delivered billions of dollars in climate and development outcomes in local communities all around the world. Our Vision: Climate security and sustainable development for all Our Mission: To maximise the impacts of climate and development interventions by creating robust standards that lead to responsible management of the planet's resources and life-changing benefits to communities around the world. Our Values Pioneering: For over a decade, we've shown how climate finance can achieve its highest potential. We’re pushing this further, creating and integrating innovative programs to deliver impacts at a greater scale. Collaborative: To realize our ambitious vision, we will join forces with strategic partners who share our goals and values. Rigorous: We will build upon our reputation for quality and rigour with more robust measurement of outcomes and deeper impact across the Sustainable Development Goals. Transparent: We were established to bring confidence, trust and accountability to carbon markets. We will continue to take strides to improve transparency in our own processes and the broader market.

Margaret Kim’s and Dr Lokesh Chandra Dube had an insightful and productive week in Madagascar. The visit involved travelling across the island to visit a number of projects including mangrove plantations and nurseries, to learn from the Bôndy team and discuss with local partners.   On Wednesday, the group went to the region of the Melaky in northwestern Madagascar, an area that faces challenges such as limited infrastructure and environmental degradation, which hinder it’s development.   In Melaky's coastal ecosystem, mangroves have suffered from the expansion of charcoal production - an activity that has not only reduced mangrove coverage but has also hindered the ecosystem's natural regeneration capacity.   Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from the government, local communities, and international partners. Bôndy and VNV Advisory Services are working to improve the long-term livelihoods of coastal communities, including equitable employment opportunities for men and women, income-generating ecosystem services, and the development of basic infrastructure. The insights gained from this trip will help us better understand how Gold Standard can best support the development of such projects going forward. We look forward to continuing our partnership with project developers and local partners to achieve broader climate and sustainable development goals.   We thank Bôndy for their hospitality and for accompanying us on this journey.   More insights from this trip coming soon!

The conventional production process used to create ammonia is carbon-intensive, accounting for approximately 1% of total Co2 emissions. Using alternative green processes across large industries, such as agriculture, could have an impact on global emission reductions.    Ammonia is often an ingredient of soil fertiliser used on agricultural land to increase crop yield. This proposed new Methodology for the Production of Green Ammonia from Gold Standard would be applicable globally, and is applicable to project activities that produce ammonia for fertilisers using less carbon-intensive processes than conventional production, mainly through the use of renewable energy.    Public comment is welcome until 26 September.  https://lnkd.in/eJ2_kKep #GoldStandard #GreenAmmonia #SDGs

Margaret Kim, CEO of Gold Standard, arrived in Madagascar yesterday for a week of visiting project sites, meeting local partners, and learning how nature-based climate activities are evolving on the unique biodiverse island.   Margaret is being accompanied by Dr Lokesh Chandra Dube, Senior Manager of Standard Development and Innovation at Gold Standard, and a team from Bôndy who are leading several projects in the region.   The trip began with Margaret and Lokesh meeting with Max Andonirina Fontaine, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Developments of the Government of Madagascar, to understand the Government’s climate, nature and sustainable development priorities and how Gold Standard could support Madagascar in reaching its goals.   The Bôndy team then introduced one of their key initiatives (in collaboration with VNV Advisory Services), the MA HONKO project, focused on restoring mangrove ecosystems. The meeting allowed Margaret, Lokesh, and the Bôndy team to discuss the impacts of these restoration efforts and learn how such projects can be supported and scaled to enhance climate adaptation and mitigation, while driving sustainable development for the nation. We appreciate Bôndy’s partnership and the opportunity to learn from their extensive experience in the development of nature activities for people and the planet.   More news about this visit to Madagascar coming soon.   #GoldStandard #NbS #BlueCarbon #SDGs

🌍 Two of the most important trends in the international carbon market over the coming decades will be the growth of credits representing carbon removals, and the increased convergence between compliance and voluntary carbon markets.   The European Council and the European Parliament has reached provisional agreement on the EU’s Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Certification Framework (CRCF), set to create the first EU-wide framework for certifying carbon removals, carbon farming and carbon storage in products.   The following month, the UK Government opened a consultation on the integration of greenhouse gas removals in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme.  Gold Standard has responded to both policy developments with key recommendations: Draw on established carbon market foundations, rather than starting from scratch. Follow international best practice in the design of GHG removal methodologies and requirements. Introduce safeguards and incentives to avoid a race-to-the-bottom. Protect the integrity of compliance markets and the incentive to decarbonise. A brand-new Methodology for the Sustainable Management of Mangroves has been released by Gold Standard in collaboration with project developer FORLIANCE, featuring remote sensing application for measurement and impact quantification. This new methodology coincides with the release of Blue Carbon and Freshwater Wetlands Activity Requirements, offering project developers and other market actors new opportunities to collaborate and drive credible climate action and sustainable development. OPPORTUNITES 🌊 Blue carbon (carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems) plays a vital part in climate mitigation and adaptation. Globally, 2% of mangroves are being lost per year. But when restored they are a powerful engine of climate mitigation. 🐠 Aquatic ecosystems play a crucial role in climate mitigation and hold huge potential for climate adaptation and improving the livelihoods of those most affected by climate change. 🌳 Mangroves are climate heroes, offering benefits beyond carbon removal and sequestration, such as storm protection, improved food security, and biodiversity preservation. KEY BENEFITS ✅ Bespoke solutions for mangrove ecosystems ✅ Innovative remote sensing application for measurement and quantification ✅ Enhanced reporting of Sustainable Development co-benefits. NEW NATURE ACTIVITIES HUB These new products can be found on the Gold Standard Nature Activities Hub, which was also released today! The hub hosts resources, tools and templates to support project developers and validation and verification bodies (VVBs) seeking to develop and validate projects that sequester emissions via forestry and agriculture activities. Margaret Kim, Gold Standard CEO, said: “This announcement marks the intersection of two strategic areas of focus for Gold Standard: nature activities to restore critical ecosystems while supporting local communities in adapting to climate change and digital tools to help monitor, measure, and verify that impact in the most credible and efficient way […]” Andreas Schnall, FORLIANCE CEO, said: “With the launch of the Sustainable Management of Mangroves Methodology, FORLIANCE, together with Gold Standard, are advancing blue carbon initiatives. By combining innovative technology with sustainable practices, we are enabling meaningful climate action that not only protects vital ecosystems but also directly improves the livelihoods of coastal communities […]” Read the news release to find out more details: https://lnkd.in/gfMKGwit #BlueCarbon #CarbonRemovals #GoldStandard #NatureActivities
