🌿 Promoting Decent Work through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) 🌿 Just concluded a capacity-building workshop in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, from 2 to 6 September 2024, focusing on Nature-based Solutions (NbS). This event brought together key stakeholders from Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, and Somalia, including government officials, civil society, and international organizations. Delivered by the ITCILO and ILO Employment Policies -intensive Investment Branch (EMPINVEST), in collaboration with the ILO PROSPECTS Programme and the KfW Project on Somalia, the workshop aimed to enhance our partners’ capacity to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and forced displacement while creating sustainable livelihoods and fostering decent work opportunities. The workshop included a hands-on experience sharing session, where participants visited NbS activities being implemented by the Addis Ababa Urban Beautification and Green Development Bureau around #Entoto. All the 38 participants participated in a group design exercise to explore the employment potential of incorporating nature-based solutions into their projects and programmes and developed actionable strategies for promoting decent work in these targeted communities. In his closing remarks, Khumbula Ndaba, the Country Director for ILO Horn of Africa emphasized the critical role of NbS in creating jobs and livelihoods. 💫 A model of resilience and economic empowerment ILO PROSPECTS launched a unique Business Plan Competition (BPC) in Ethiopia, which is empowering the most marginalized host and refugee micro entrepreneurs in the Somali region. Take the story of Fatima, a refugee who has lived in Ethiopia for 35 years. Despite her dreams of expanding her maize business, access to capital was a constant barrier. Winning the BPC not only awarded her ETB 90,000 but also provided invaluable business development support. Today, Fatima has diversified her offerings, catering to her community's needs and setting her sights on owning a shop within five years. This initiative, launched by International Labour Organization and Hasi Consulting, is a testament to the impact of combining financial support with strategic business mentorship. The BPC, which attracted 1,931 proposals, selected 50 exceptional businesses for grant funding and ongoing mentorship. It is fostering resilience, economic growth, and self-reliance among both refugees and host communities in Ethiopia's Somali region. Starting with a passion for helping people and saving lives, she found her calling in firefighting. With International Labour Organization supported Government of Kenya's Recognition of Prior Learning (#RPL) programme she became a certified professional firefighter. Her first experience at the Ruja Bypass was a turning point, where she learned the critical #skills needed to ensure safety and efficiency on the #job. Theresa Waikuru is a founder of Baraka Women's Centre in Kenya. She graduated in the first cohort of Recognition of Prior Learning (#RPL) program in #Kenya in hairdressing and dressmaking trade. She never went to a dressmaking or hairdressing school but learned her skills through practice to an extent that she was coaching many others in her community. RPL certified her #skills and provided her with formal certification in line with university or a college degree.
