Time flies... SB60 took place in Bonn last month and COP29 in Baku is only four months away. Following the failure to adopt decisions on Article 6 at COP28 in Dubai, the June UN climate conference in Bonn (SB60) saw a new, reinvigorated spirit of compromise between countries. Agreements were reached on relatively minor issues relating to emission avoidance, the treatment of confidential information and common nomenclatures for reporting. Also, draft decision texts on both Article 6.2 and 6.4 were forwarded for further discussions at COP29 in Baku. However, real progress on the few thorniest outstanding issues remained limited. To resolve these highly complex matters, IETA expects a need for significant intersessional engagement, both at technical and political level, in order to facilitate an agreement in Baku. If you would like to read more, the International policy team at IETA published a comment on the outcome.
