On 5 August 2024, Swiss Bank Union Bancaire Privée, UBP SA (UBP) announced that it has entered into two exclusive agreements to acquire Societe Generale’s international private banking operations in the UK and Switzerland. Lenz & Staehelin acted as UBP’s global counsel for both transactions, which will see UBP acquire Societe Generale’s Swiss private banking activities (Societe Generale Private Banking Suisse) as well as its UK and Channel Islands wealth management arm (SG Kleinwort Hambros). On 21 August 2024, the Swiss Federal Council adopted a new set of sanctions against Russia, further aligning the Swiss sanctions with the European Union's 14th sanctions package. The newly adopted restrictions focus on several key areas, including a ban on Russian diamonds, extended deadlines for divestment transactions approval, and stricter financial and export controls.
