🌍 The Peoples Forests Partnership, a valued member of the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, has urged the Science Based Targets initiative to include forest communities in developing corporate decarbonization guidance. 🌱 Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners, and local communities receive less than 1% of climate finance despite being the best stewards of natural ecosystems. Their voices must be heard. 📊 Major corporations' Scope 3 emissions often exceed entire nations' emissions. The PFP supports using high-quality, rights-based carbon credits to address this, with direct community funding and ambitious decarbonization targets. 🗣️ Including these communities in carbon credit discussions is vital for effective climate finance and conservation. Natural Climate Solutions Alliance hat dies direkt geteilt
The Peoples Forests Partnership has returned from an engaging London Climate Action Week, in which we jointly held the session, ‘Carbon & biodiversity finance that supports community rights’, on Wednesday 26 June with Fauna & Flora and Natural Climate Solutions Alliance. Key messages from the session: ✊🏽 Support for human and land rights must form the basis of any nature market and financing instruments for nature. 💷 Markets and finance that aim to invest in land or biodiversity conservation and restoration need to be made accessible to communities around the world. 🤲 Inspirational governments around the world are working on institutionalizing the role of communities in land stewardship. Panellists at the event discussed the threats posed by climate finance and markets that undermine community and human rights. Pasang Dolma Sherpa, Executive Director of CIPRED, explained that, with discussion on carbon finance moving at breakneck speed, rights-based approaches that include Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners, local communities and Afro-descendants (IP, LC and AD) are still found wanting. Sherpa said: “Free, prior and informed consent of IP, LC and AD must form the basis for any nature-based market and development of their lands and territories, with land tenure security as a foundation.” Gustavo Sánchez Valle, Director of the Mexican Land Workers Organizations’ Network (Red MOCAF), reminded attendees that “carbon markets are an alternative as long as IP, LC and AD rights are fully respected, but they need to be made more accessible to IP, LC and AD”. He also called for ensuring the participation of IP, LC and AD in consultation and consent processes so that they can understand the market and its pricing, develop skills and be trained. The Scottish Land Commission’s Head of Rights and Responsibilities, Emma Cooper, told the session that Scotland is introducing a scheme whereby communities have the right to apply for land up for sale, and can request ownership or leasing of a publicly owned land and/or a role in decision-making over it. In addition, the 2024 Land Reform Bill makes it a legal requirement for investors to include benefits for communities in their land management plans. These solutions represent a historical effort by the Scottish government to increase the role of communities in land stewardship. We also heard from Zoe Quiroz Cullen, Director of the Climate and Nature Linkages programme at Fauna & Flora . In Liberia, the programme has sought to protect and restore nature through bringing new areas under conservation management with opportunities for long-term sustainable finance. In 2023, Flora & Fauna brought together the Liberia forest development authorities, communities and civil society to sign a declaration committing to a process of customary land formalization for communities that have claims to such lands. Other speakers included Feja Lesniewska, Rupert Quinlan and Anna Lehmann. #ClimateAction #CarbonCredits

Now #LondonClimateActionWeek has come to a close, we reflect on the key issues and insights shared across the events we co-hosted with our NCS Alliance members and partners. Our sessions underscored the central role of natural climate solutions in climate change mitigation. We focused on issues relevant for businesses planning to procure high-integrity NCS credits, highlighting the importance of robust and transparent carbon markets. The discussions underscored several critical themes: 📥Making the #BusinessCase for Carbon Credits: It’s clear that to drive corporate investment in #carboncredits, we must articulate a strong business case. Companies need to see the financial and strategic value in supporting #NaturalClimateSolutions (NCS). 👩🏫 Beyond #Carbon: The value of NCS extends far beyond carbon sequestration. These solutions contribute to #nature, #health, #gender equity, and other social benefits. However, it’s essential to recognize and mitigate risks to Indigenous People and local communities and ensure equitable outcomes. 🏞#Protecting and #Restoring Nature: Effective climate action requires a dual focus on protecting existing natural landscapes and restoring degraded ones. This holistic approach ensures the sustainability and resilience of our ecosystems. The events highlighted the urgent need for public-private collaboration, significant financial commitments, and integrated climate and nature strategies to scale carbon markets and include nature-based solutions in corporate carbon credit portfolios. Our Calls to Action: - 🤝#Collaborate: Join forces across sectors to amplify our impact. - 👥Lean In: Engage deeply with the complexities and opportunities in the carbon market. - 🚀Action Now: Commit to immediate and meaningful actions to integrate high-integrity NCS into your climate strategies. A huge thank you to our members, co-hosts, and partners including WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Forest Investor Club, Emergent , LEAF Coalition, Salesforce, Kita, South Pole, Chloris Geospatial, AXA Investment Managers, Fauna & Flora , Peoples Forests Partnership, Nature4Climate Boston Consulting Group (BCG), ERM, ERM Sustainability Institute, BeZero Carbon, PwC, Work Opportunities for Women, UK Aid Direct/Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, ICE, and Make UK. 🌍📢 THE URGENT NEED TO FINANCE NATURAL CLIMATE SOLUTIONS #NaturalClimateSolutions plays a vital role in mitigating #climatechange and offers significant #social, #environmental, and #biodiversity benefits. The. Time. To. Act. Is. Now. Together with IETA, our new paper highlights four key realities that underpin this urgency: 1. NCS offers higher mitigation potential compared to other abatement options. 2. Nature loss threatens economic growth, risking billions of dollars of assets within the next 5-10 years. 3. The effectiveness of nature as a mitigation tool decreases after 2030 due to ecosystem tipping points. 4. NCS addresses climate and economic risks while benefiting people, communities, and biodiversity. Carbon markets are essential for driving private sector investments into NCS at the necessary scale. Given the urgency of the nature and climate crises, we must act now. 🔗 Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/ejH8E9ys #ClimateAction #NaturalClimateSolutions #NCSAlliance #Sustainability #IETA #InvestInNature
