Info

About Swiss4Afrika At Swiss4Afrika, we are committed to empowering local Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) in South Africa, aiming to build stronger communities and create lasting change. Our NPO number is CHE-461.985.552. Our Mission: Swiss4Afrika collaborates with NPO communities and leaders who are tirelessly working to provide essential services such as shelter, education, and healthcare. Many of these dedicated organisations are overlooked by the government, local companies, local foundations and in some cases international companies and NGO’s for social aid due to BEE policies. Our mission is to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability, ultimately breaking the cycles of poverty and fostering self-reliance. Our Approach: We focus on building capabilities within local NPOs, ensuring they can thrive independently and sustainably even after our direct involvement concludes. By prioritizing basic needs such as housing and food, and emphasizing the importance of education, we strive to leave no one behind. Our support spans across youth education programs and skill-based learning for adults, because we believe that education is the cornerstone of sustainable development. Our Expertise: Our team brings a wealth of experience and expertise, including: - Managing and supporting NPO organisations. - Hands-on experience with community projects in developing countries. - Organisational strategy and operational excellence. - Professional fundraising and resource mobilisation. Our Methodology: Our methodology for identifying, evaluating, and collaborating with local NPOs is meticulously designed to ensure maximum transparency, governance, and accountability to all stakeholders. We adhere to the guidelines of the Swiss Code of Obligations for charitable non-profit organisations, and our activities are supervised by the Supervisory Authority for Foundations, Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.           🧀 Swiss4Afrika is proud to announce that the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa is sponsoring one of our sustainability projects. Specifically, our Multimedia and Early Childhood Educational Centre has been selected for funding. 🫕🫕🫕 We will provide a multimedia room to a minority group of homeless individuals in South Africa who do not receive funding from the South African government or any international non-profit organizations. The project aims to place preschool children in kindergarten to provide them with early childhood education opportunities. Additionally, it will provide them with one nutritious meal per day to stimulate brain development. The project will provide a safe, dry, and clean environment for school children to do homework, access computers and the internet, and receive vital digital skills training. This will help align their developmental progress with that of their peers who have a more stable home environment. Additionally, the facility will include a multimedia room for adults to use computers and the internet for job searching, CV creation, and communication with potential employers. Furthermore, the multimedia centre will provide online courses to enhance skills. Swiss4Afrika will also enrol two mothers from Soli in a distance learning programme to become preschool teachers. This will make them employable and provide much-needed teachers for our early education programmes. The two women will use the multimedia room for distance learning and teaching preschool children at Soli. We welcome Embassy staff to actively participate in building the room, installing computers, or designing learning materials. Swiss4Afrika has several self-sustainability projects to be realized this year.     🍔   We have a project that serves three purposes: providing healthier meals, delivering food parcels to the elderly and frail, and serving as a training kitchen for the youth. https://lnkd.in/dHFV9pue 🎩 Furthermore, one of our care homes will knit beanies for a winter sports team in Switzerland to generate income for the homeless shelter. 🍲 Finally, there is a self-sustained soup kitchen in White River, South Africa that serves the poor. Please follow us on www.swiss4afrika.com, subscribe to our newsletter, and consider becoming a monthly contributing member for 25CHF. We are the FIRST in South Africa 🌍 A New Chapter in Lydenburg: Empowering Children through Cooking 🍽️   We're thrilled to announce that our ECD centre in Lydenburg is now part of the Cook School Club — a pioneering initiative where children inspire children through the art of cooking.   Cook School isn’t just about food; it’s about transforming lives. Founded in 2019 by cookbook author Amanda Grant and her husband Kristian, this not-for-profit organization empowers kids—especially in underprivileged communities—with the skills and confidence to cook healthy, affordable, and delicious meals at home.   From the UK to South Africa, Cook School has made its mark by hosting in-person cooking classes, where each child leaves not just with a meal, but with the knowledge to recreate it, fostering independence and a love for nutritious food.   Here in Lydenburg, we’re taking this mission further. Meet Nomsa Mokoena, our newest volunteer. With her passion and the Cook School platform, we're set to make a lasting impact—teaching children in our homeless centre, and reaching out to rural communities, to see, use, and respect food in a whole new way.   👉 But to truly make this vision a reality, we need your help. 👈   Our biggest challenge? We urgently need a fully-equipped industrial kitchen at our centre. This is where you come in. We're calling on partners who believe in the power of food education to sponsor this kitchen and join us in changing the future, one meal at a time.   💡 Every contribution counts—no matter how small. Together, we can create a ripple of hope and transformation across South Africa. One of the most heartwarming videos that came back to us this week. We hoped to change lives but seeing the hope we have created for these two lovely people makes all the hard work worth it.

Hope kindle Hope. In the video below, you'll meet Elsa (a pseudonym), who found herself homeless after what she describes as “too many bad decisions.” You’ll also meet little Pietie, a child with learning difficulties whose parents are unable to provide the support he needs. Before, Elsa was just another homeless and unemployed person living in the homeless shelter supported by Swiss4Afrika, and Pietie was just another child from a homeless family who received no special attention for his learning difficulties. Both fell through the cracks of South Africa's social support system. This video captures the essence of why we built this center. Elsa, drawing on teaching skills she learned long ago, patiently helps Pietie learn to read and write. In doing so, she not only finds renewed purpose to her live, but also offers Pietie hope for a brighter future. Swiss4Afrika are excited to share the recent opening of our Multimedia and ECD Centre at Soli Deo Gloria in Lydenburg, made possible by the generous support of the The Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa. This center is a lifeline for homeless and unemployed minorities, providing resources and opportunities that were once out of reach. Before this center, neither the children nor adults in our community had access to computers or the internet. Now, students can complete their homework and research projects, while adults have the chance to reskill and search for employment. Our work is far from over—we’re just getting started. But with your help, we can do so much more. In South Africa, every contribution, no matter how small, makes a big difference. Will you join us in continuing this journey of hope and transformation? Swiss4Afrika is thrilled to welcome Nomsa Mokoena as our newest volunteer. I had the pleasure of meeting Nomsa at the opening of our ECD, sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa, in Lydenburg last month, and her passion for nutrition and wellness left a lasting impression. As a dedicated dietitian, Nomsa is known for her meticulous approach and commitment to holistic health. With experience in both leadership and collaborative roles, she understands the importance of considering every aspect of a person's life when crafting personalized nutrition plans—balancing daily routines, cultural backgrounds, and individual preferences to help her clients thrive. Nomsa will be working hand-in-hand with our management team and the new ECD center, leading classes on healthy eating and food preparation. Her vision? To empower our community with the knowledge and skills to make healthier choices every day. But we're not stopping there. We're on a mission to create a fully functional training kitchen at Soli Deo Gloria, where Nomsa has already volunteered to lead nutritional information and cooking classes. This kitchen will be a game-changer, providing a space where learning, health, and community come together. Are you passionate about making a difference? We're seeking sponsors to help us bring this vision to life. If you want to be part of something truly impactful, reach out to us today! Let's build a healthier future together. Our newest Early learning and Computer room. We reached the newspapers in South Africa with our Education program that would bring ECD teaching to rural South Africa, Coding and Robotics as well as various sustainable programs regarding food management and zero waste. On Saturday, 10 August Mr Marino Cuenat, the deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa opened the newly build ECD and Multimedia centre at Soli Deo Gloria Care centre. This centre was built in collaboration with the Embassy and Swiss4Afrika, a non-Profit organisation based in Bern, Switzerland. Swiss4Afrika main mission is to assist centres such as Soli Deo Gloria in Infrastructure development, better education opportunities to young children, school going children as well as adult skills development. Swiss4Afrika work in Switzerland and South Africa with minorities and the most vulnerable among us. They work to break the cycle of poverty in South Africa, addressing six of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. According to Mr Randel van Heerden, Director of Swiss4Afrika the Multimedia centre at Soli will also host the Early Childhood development centre where the youngest kids living at Soli would have the opportunities to learn via play but also receive much needed education opportunities to ready them for school and educational challenges. “We saw that some of our teenagers really struggled and after consulting with an Education therapist we determined that they struggle because they never received education opportunities between the ages of 3 and 7. These are some of the most important stages of education and lays the foundation for all further educational opportunities. Getting this wrong does impact young people in any further studies.” We plan to also host early education training workshops to other ECD’s in and around Lydenburg. 3 ECD’s from Mashishing attended the opening and they will be among the ECD centres invited to training sessions with SIX bricks and Play box – all training methods given by Care for Education and LEGO foundation. This project is just one of the sustainability projects Swiss4Afrika has planned at Soli. The kitchen at Soli is in an appalling state and hardly able to feed the 150 people who eat twice a day at Soli. Swiss4Afrika has a brilliant project to renovate this kitchen and turn that into a contribution to the Lydenburg area as a teaching/working kitchen to deliver meals via the Meals on Wheels system. 👩 Why We Celebrate National Women’s Day in South Africa 👵 On August 9th, 1956, 20,000 fearless women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, standing united against the oppressive Apartheid pass laws that required black women to carry passes. Their bravery reshaped our nation’s history. But as we commemorate their courage 68 years later, it’s disheartening to see that the struggle for equality isn’t over. Today, under the B-BBEE Act, many women and local women-led nonprofits are still sidelined, denied access to social grants, sponsorships, and funding—ironically, in the name of empowerment. Three women, in particular, inspire me deeply: 1. 📣 Gerda Venter 🥇 - Director of Soli Deo Gloria Care Centre in Lydenburg. Gerda manages a shelter caring for 160 homeless individuals, from babies to the elderly, with almost no financial support. Despite 90% of the residents belonging to minority groups, Soli is disqualified from state grants and corporate sponsorships due to lack of BEE certification. Even international aid seems to overlook their plight, leaving them reliant solely on the goodwill of small businesses and local communities. 2. 🏆 Riemie van der Berg 🎗 - At 82 years old, Riemie lives in a toolshed at Soli Deo Gloria. When I visited in March, she handed me 60 hand-knitted beanies, insisting they go to the “poor” in Switzerland because, in her words, “it must be very cold and poor people might need beanies.” Here is a woman who, with almost nothing, still found a way to give. 3. 🎇 Miena Reineke ✨ - Director of Katoen Outreach, a homeless shelter dedicated to serving minority groups. Miena’s organization receives no government funding, no support from big business, and no local nonprofit aid, all because they lack a BEE certificate. These women, their resilience, and their commitment to their communities embody the spirit of National Women’s Day. Yet, they’re left to fight alone. 👉 You can help 👈 . By supporting Swiss4Afrika, you can make a difference in the lives of these women and the people they care for. Let’s honor the legacy of those who marched in 1956 by standing with today’s unsung heroes. Together, we can create the change they deserve. Raising Awareness for Matla A Bana: Giving a Voice to Abused Children Today, I want to raise awareness about an extraordinary NPO in South Africa, Matla A Bana, which is tirelessly fighting against the horrific scourge of child sexual abuse. This incredible organization assists over 30,000 child victims every year in South Africa. **A CHILD IS RAPED IN SOUTH AFRICA EVERY 3 MINUTES.** **MOST OF THEM ARE YOUNG GIRLS BETWEEN 3 AND 12.** **IN 90% OF THE CASES, THE PERPETRATOR IS KNOWN TO THEM.** As a young policeman in the South African Police Service during the 90s, I often volunteered to accompany detectives working in the Child Protection Unit. My regular duties involved chasing hijackers, bank robbers, and handling hostage situations—high-stakes action that got the adrenaline pumping. But nothing could prepare me for the gut-wrenching experience of riding along with child protection officers and listening to interviews with suspects. It made my hair stand on end, my fists clench, and my heart ache with a burning desire for justice. Today, Swiss4Afrika extends a heartfelt shout-out to the dedicated team at Matla A Bana. Their mission is to minimize the secondary trauma that young girls endure when reporting these heinous crimes. Their work is crucial in providing these brave children with the support and care they so desperately need and deserve. Matla A Bana is truly giving a voice to abused children. Their relentless efforts not only help these young victims find a path to healing but also ensure they are heard, believed, and supported every step of the way. Let's stand together and support Matla A Bana in their fight to protect and uplift these vulnerable children. Visit their website, learn more about their work, and find out how you can make a difference. Together, we can bring hope and change to the lives of countless young girls in South Africa. Let's give them the future they deserve. http://matlaabana.co.za/

🔴 **Urgent Appeal for Homeless Families in South Africa** 🔴 In many South African communities, the lack of adequate housing and educational facilities severely impacts children's education. Without a stable home, it’s nearly impossible for them to concentrate and succeed in their studies. Many educational centers also lack the resources to provide quality education. 🏠 **Stable homes are crucial for effective education** 🏠 We at Swiss4Afrika are incredibly grateful to the Embassy of Switzerland for sponsoring a Multimedia and Early Education Centre in a homeless center. This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring equal opportunities for children in homeless shelters. However, education alone isn’t enough if families live in dark, cold, and wet conditions. 💡 **Join us in our mission to provide decent housing** 💡 Swiss4Afrika is launching a construction project to supply all families in our homeless center with safe, warm, and dry accommodations. **Learn more about our efforts and how you can help: [Swiss4Afrika Website]** Together, we can make a difference.
