🤔 Misinformation around arms trafficking from Ukraine🇺🇦 to Europe🇪🇺 has been rampant, with Russia claiming that a significant portion of Western-supplied weapons end up on the black market. However, our recent investigation reveals that these assertions are unfounded. Ukraine's tracking and reporting systems are effective in delivering Western aid to the front line. While the country has seen a rise in unregistered weapons, the illegal market for these is low-scale and ‘organic’, rather than large-scale and organized. For the most part, demand for illegal weapons in Ukraine comes from civilians looking for means of self-protection. 📊 The existing analyses of armed bandits in NW Nigeria have largely centered on the violence they perpetrate, often overlooking their intricate structures, resourcing mechanisms, and operational environments. Our latest study, part of a series of publications jointly produced with the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) aims to address this gap by focusing on two major flashpoints: the states of Zamfara and Kaduna 🇳🇬 Key insights include: -Hierarchical structures and clear divisions of roles within bandit groups. -The evolution of revenue-generating activities, from cattle rustling to gold mining. -The interplay between licit and illicit economies, influencing bandits' tactics. -The role of ethnic affinity and shared grievances in fostering cooperation among groups. -The necessity of understanding governance functions in formulating effective interventions. 📖 Read the full report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eQi65ypd

❗️🇪🇨 Ecuador is in crisis. Once South America's second safest country, it's now the most violent, with 47.25 murders per 100,000 residents. The surge in crime is fueled by rampant arms trafficking, which has exploded since regulatory controls were loosened in 2023. Our latest report, with OECO and PADF, shows the deep connections between regulatory changes, criminality, and escalating violence in Ecuador. It also offers urgent recommendations to curb the arms trade and restore safety. Read more: https://buff.ly/3RHTRZR

💥 The war in Ukraine has amplified the strategic relevance of the Danube, Europe's second-longest river. ⚓️ Increased investments in port infrastructure brings increased risks of smuggling, for example of drugs, cigarettes, fuel and weapons. Despite few seizures, there are warning signs of vulnerability to trafficking along the river. Improved intelligence sharing and a Danube law enforcement network are vital 🤝 ➡️ https://buff.ly/4606oOB

Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime hat dies direkt geteilt
Organized crime has recently outpaced our ability to counteract it, threatening global security and societal well-being. Despite the severity of this issue, current responses are inadequate. We urgently need innovative thinking and proactive measures. Some argue there are more pressing issues like geopolitical tensions and climate change. However, organized crime intersects with these challenges, undermining peace, human rights, and sustainable development. Our new report emphasizes the intersections between the legitimate and illicit worlds, advocating for targeted interventions at key geographic nodes in global value chains. It is not a blueprint for a global strategy but aims to provoke discussions and highlight major challenges posed by transnational organized crime. This goes back to the roots of the GI-TOC, which was established in 2013 to identify the building blocks of a global strategy to address transnational organized crime more effectively. We hope this report will inspire action, provoke conversations, and spark new approaches to improve prevention, disruption, and cooperation against organized crime. By acting locally and thinking globally, we can make a significant impact. ➡️ https://buff.ly/3XNmjNY
