What is a leader? We often think of a leader as someone who is in charge of people, products, or processes. But what about the person on the team who everyone looks to when the boss is gone or when advice is needed? That person is a leader too. Leaders can have formal power or responsibilities, or they can simply be a person of influence. But what about the person on the team who everyone looks to when the boss is gone or when advice is needed? That person is a leader too. Leaders can have formal power or responsibilities, or they can simply be a person of influence. Regardless of role, research indicates that effective, successful leaders are those with strong character and the ability to lead with courage, humility, and compassion. Fortunately, character is not something we are just “born with.” Character is something that can be developed over time. In this program, you will have the opportunity to explore seven dimensions of leadership that are associated with strong character through case studies and examples. You will also complete self-reflection exercises, assessments, and activities to initiate and continue the work of developing these character dimensions.

Project from October 19-26, 2019 in Silay City, Philippines on the island of Negros Occidental. It was the first Global Village build that I have participated in, where multiple family dwellings were constructed during our work week. We used cement and bamboo technology to develop house frames; painted interior and exterior walls of homes; and injected cement into bamboo poles as a part of multiple home dwelling construction. https://share.habitat.org/shaun-mcmillan-gv20503

Project from February 16-25, 2018 in a small, remote village outside of Battambang, Cambodia. Raised over $31,000 for the build from 15 team participants from Europe, Asia and North America. Funds were used for cement, sand, gravel, bricks, and other materials for the walls and floor of the house. A septic tank was placed underground and a room for a toilet was constructed during this build, as well.

Project from March 11-19, 2016 outside Da Nang, Vietnam in Quang Nam province in a village called Que Son. Fundraising for the project started August 2015 and ended January 2016. About $26,000 was raised by a international team of 14 and it was used for building supplies plus a water pump for the family's new home in Vietnam.

The idea of this project is that left-over bakery goods, which would otherwise be thrown out at the end of the day, are collected from small stores and bakeries and distributed to needy charitable organizations in Zürich. Volunteers collect the bakery items on a weekly basis and then re-distribute the goods to various social service agencies and non-profit organizations to feed those they service.

  • When the cause of death does not exist: Time for the WHO to close the ICD classification gap for Medical Aid in Dying

    The Lancet

Medical aid in dying (MAID) is a highly controversial ethical issue in the global medical community. Unfortunately, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) of the World Health Organization (WHO) lacks coding for MAID. Therefore, no robust data adequately monitors worldwide trends that include information on diseases and conditions underlying the patients’ request for assisted dying (“MAID gap”). Countries with legalised MAID observe substantial increases in cases, and likely additional countries will allow MAID in the near future. Hence, we encourage the WHO to create specific ICD codes for MAID. According to internationally established practices, a revised classification would require separate MAID-codes for (1) assisted suicide and (2) voluntary active euthanasia including supplemental codings of diseases, clusters of symptoms and function-oriented categories. By addressing these concerns, the WHO could close the “MAID gap” with new codes providing urgently necessary insights to society, public health decision-makers and regulators on this comparatively new social and medical ethical phenomenon.

The legalisation of assisted suicide is one of the most debated topics in the field of medical ethics worldwide. In countries in which assisted suicide is not legal, public discussions about its approval also encompass considerations of the long-term consequences that such legalisation would bring, for example, how many people will use this option, from what conditions would they be suffering, would there be differences between male and female assisted suicide and which developments and trends…

  • Should Swiss laws be tougher on environmental and human rights violations?

Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) - Ethikos

Will an additional law need to be imposed on companies, or is self-regulation and voluntary measures to prevent environmental and human rights violations enough? In April 2015, a Swiss referendum was introduced to change the Federal Constitution and impose additional responsibilities and liabilities for Swiss-based companies. As of May 2020, the constitution has not yet been amended.

In April 2015, a Swiss referendum was introduced to change the Federal Constitution and impose additional responsibilities and liabilities for Swiss-based companies. As of May 2020, the constitution has not yet been amended.

Proponents of such an initiative recognize that whereas most companies implement environmental, social, and governance standards in their business practices, some companies might put greater emphasis on profits over environmental and human rights. Because of the misalignments in companies’ self-regulation priorities, they believe that a change of law is now required for each company to be responsible and accountable for violations of environmental and human rights laws.

Donovan told me that the subsidiary was very small in size, and given that just three years ago it was acquired by Pharmatops, an audit was not really necessary. He stated that surely there are larger and more riskier operations within Pharmatops to review. Also, during the time I wanted to carry out the audit, not all management staff would be around – so Donovan asked to postpone it. He must have known it was highly likely some of his fraud schemes would be discovered in the course of an audit.
