Emmanuel Camarillo was born and raised in Chicago. He has been reporting for the Sun-Times since 2019, covering everything from mayoral debates to breaking crime stories and alligators in Humboldt Park.

The sit-in garnered support from Mayor Brandon Johnson and U.S. Reps. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and Delia Ramirez of Illinois. It began amid the prime-time speeches on the third night of the convention.

Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling said some of the people who joined Tuesday’s protest outside the Israeli consulate grew violent and damaged property. “That was their intent,” Snelling said. “As a Chicago Police Department, we did everything that we could to deescalate that situation.”

It happened near Ogilvie Transportation Center, where the demonstrators gathered to protest the Israeli consulate. Officers also allowed the group to march south toward Union Station.
During Monday’s march, dozens of protesters broke through the security perimeter fencing near Park 578, a designated protest site near the United Center. Police responded before the protesters could get any further, leading to a standoff. Eventually, the fencing was breached in five locations, and police detained several protesters.
Hundreds of people rallying against the Israel-Hamas war and restrictions on reproductive rights kicked off the first protest of the Democratic National Convention on Sunday, but they were met by an even larger showing from Chicago police.
