The Real Urban Emissions Initiative completed a three year long remote sensing study commissioned by Transport Scotland under their Air Remote Sensing Project to define emission factors of Scottish light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The final report concludes that while NOx emissions from passenger cars decreased year-over-year, taxis 🚕  still show elevated levels. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from #aviation will heavily depend on drop-in fuels that replace fossil fuels, known as sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). ✈️💨    🇬🇧 In April 2024, the UK government released a proposal for a sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) mandate, with targets starting in 2025 and increasing to 2040.     🎯The central target of a 10% SAF blend by 2030 goes even further than the EU’s legislation target under ReFuel EU SAF mandate.     Unlike the EU, the UK has proposed to cap the contribution of first-generation 🌱 🛢️ #HEFA-based fuels. While they will make up the bulk of compliance in early years, the mandate will cap their use and leave more room for second-generation fuel pathways.   A new report examines the cost implications of the proposed SAF mandate targets from an industrial development perspective. Some findings include:    - Fuel costs will increase by £0.10–£0.12/liter in 2035 compared with prevailing rates for fossil jet fuel.     - Results indicate an investment requirement of £2.6 to £ 3.7 billion from 2025–2035, depending on the scenario. 🚗🔌 The beginning of the end for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (#PHEV) in Europe?    Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (#PHEV) combine electric and combustion engine power. However, their potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions depends on how much they are driven on electricity.    In 2025, Europe is adjusting the regulation to make the official CO₂ emissions of PHEVs more representative of their real-world emissions: the assumed electric drive share of PHEVs—reflected in the utility factor—will be more closely aligned to real-world usage.     This means that to achieve the same CO₂ emissions on paper as before, the electric range of a PHEV would have to increase by around two and a half to three times.    How will these updated regulations affect car manufacturers’ plans to meet the next #EU climate targets? ICCT Research Lead Jan Dornoff offers some insights.    "It is doubtful whether this is more economical for manufacturers than increasing the proportion of electric vehicles. Fully electric cars are already cheaper for buyers. 🚗💨 A new study from The Real Urban Emissions Initiative analyzes the on-road emissions of vehicles in the Delhi region and provides an independent snapshot of the real-world fleet. Key findings include: - Significant improvements were observed in tailpipe emissions across all pollutants measured with the adoption of the BS VI standard—NOx emissions from private cars showed a reduction of 81% and buses nearly 95% from BS IV standards. - High-use commercial vehicle emissions were much higher than private use vehicles. For example, BS VI taxi and light goods vehicle fleets were shown to emit 2.4 and 5.0 times more #NOx emissions than their private car counterparts.  - Compressed natural gas (#CNG) vehicle fleets also showed high NOx emissions, challenging the view that CNG is a “clean” alternative fuel.     This analysis could help guide the development of targeted policies to reduce emissions, including the adoption of more stringent emission standards, the accelerated adoption of ZEVs, and the deployment of remote sensing technology for real-world monitoring.      Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/e8VnZa5N  #AirQuality #UrbanEmissions #SustainableCities #EnvironmentalResearch #Delhi

🇲🇽 The ICCT is proud to share the participatory diagnosis co-led with CAMe (Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis), C40 Cities, and GIZ México, focusing on advancing electric mobility across Mexico's Megalopolis, which includes Mexico City and six other states. This effort aims to engage authorities and outline routes for transport electrification for passenger and freight in the region.   🔋 This multi-stage process coordinated expert recommendations, best practices, local experiences and convened government agencies and stakeholders from industry, academia and civil society to develop a common plan to accelerate transport electrification and improve mobility in the Megalopolis to clean the air and reduce climate change impacts.   🌱 This document is part of the activities conducted by the ICCT in Mexico, where we have established a significant collaboration with Metrobús within the ZEBRA Partnership to accelerate the implementation of electric bus fleets since 2020. 🇪🇺 To help reduce #CO2 emissions from aviation in Europe, the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation—adopted in October 2023 as part of the #EU Fit for 55 package—mandates the use of sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). It lays out the types of feedstocks and fuels that will be eligible to meet SAF blending targets.      In our briefing, we update an assessment of the availability of biomass materials that meet these eligibility criteria and identify those that could be supplied with the lowest sustainability risks. We find that: 🛫 SAF blending targets up to 2035 can be met using low-GHG biomass without higher-risk feedstocks that are prone to labeling fraud or could impact global markets for food and animal feed, for example.     🎯 Achieving later targets of up to 35% bio-SAF will be more challenging.    ♻️ Investing in the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic feedstocks (e.g. agricultural and forestry residues) would help ensure a sufficient supply of SAF to meet long-term blending targets.    Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7B4eYGV #SAF #emissions #climate #aviation #fuels
