English: 21 yrs old, Ethiopian lady with post circumcision inclusion cyst of the vulva containing stones. The lady underwent circumcision (infibulation) at the age of 8 years.
The vulva after partial incision. Picture taken after incision of the lower half of the fused labiae and extraction of the 1st stone; thick discharge is visible through a dimple at the upper end of the fused labiae with underlying 2nd stone before full incision. Epidermoid inclusion cysts of the vulva are one of the commonest late complications of female genital cutting. These cysts occur as a result of the implantation of the epidermal keratinized squamous epithelial cells and sebaceous glands into the dermis in the line of circumcision scars and typically present as painless cystic vulvar swellings. Calcifications inside these cysts very rarely lead to formation of ‘vulvar stones’ which are the result of delayed presentation of patients. |
