Final Days to

Complete your CLE

THE 2022-2024 CLE REPORTING PERIOD ENDS ON JUNE 30, 2024

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED YOUR CLE REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS REPORTING PERIOD (2022-2024), DO IT NOW !

  • Any CLE that has been completed since July 1, 2022 should be reported NOW!
  • All CLE credits must be completed AND reported on your CLE transcript by July 31, 2024 to avoid the $200 late reporting fee
  • There is an additional $200 reinstatement fee if you are suspended for CLE non-compliance
  • Only half of your required credits can be obtained from pre-recorded online courses, teaching credits, or publication credits.
  • Live attendance is either a traditional, in-person classroom setting OR a live, fully interactive webinar where you can interact with the speakers and ask questions. Please note that watching a recorded webinar that requires you to periodically verify you are still watching is NOT live attendance.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP REPORTING & FEE NOTICE

On June 14, 2023, an orange postcard was mailed to all Active, Active but not practicing, and Inactive Members via U. S. mail. The postcard contained instructions on how to complete annual reporting (FRD, IOLTA & Succession Planning - NOTE: This does not include CLE reporting) and pay annual fees for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The deadline for reporting (FRD, IOLTA & Succession Planning - NOTE: Not CLE reporting) and paying annual membership fees is 11:59 p.m. September 1, 2024.

The Bylaws of the WVSB and the Supreme Court's Administrative Rules of the State Bar do not provide for the waiver of penalties and reinstatement fees (non-military). Members are obligated to notify the WVSB within 10 days of any change in contact information (Bylaw 2.02). Notice to members is presumptively deemed adequate if transmitted using membership information on record with the WVSB (Bylaw 13.02). It is the duty of every member to keep informed about the payment of membership fees, and failure to receive notice of nonpayment or suspension shall not affect the operation of such suspension (Rule 3.03). Failure to receive the orange card does not relieve you of your responsibilities of reporting and paying your fees.

CLE Reporting Tip

Many members comment that “live/interactive webinar” is not a selection option when submitting a CLE course for approval. When you submit a Live/interactive webinar course, you should select the Attendance option, as this instructional method counts towards attendance CLE credits. If you are submitting a Pre-recorded video course, you should select the Online/AV option to submit the CLE.

MCLE NOTICE

The State Bar is currently experiencing a very high call volume due to the approaching CLE reporting deadline. If you have a question about your CLE transcript or CLE compliance, please do not call. Instead, please email Samantha Chase at [email protected], Andrew Eden at [email protected], or Mary Jane Pickens at [email protected]. All inquiries are important to us, and this will help us respond more efficiently. Thank you.

NEWS

The State Bar Requests Your Assistance

The State Bar maintains an In Memoriam list of attorneys who are deceased. The link to the In Memoriam is above under Bar Links. If you know of an attorney who has died this year, or during prior years, who are not included in the In Memoriam lists, please email Kathy Henning at [email protected] with the name of the deceased attorney. It would help to know the date of death and, if available, provide an obituary.

Legal Ethics Opinion - 24-01 - Adopted

"Tuesday Legal Connect"

Earn FREE CLE Credit Providing Legal Information By Phone!

The State Bar needs volunteer attorneys each Tuesday evening in July from 6-8 p.m. to field legal questions from the public and provide legal information ONLY as part of the "Tuesday Legal Connect" program.

Volunteers from anywhere in the state can take calls remotely from their home, office, etc. All you need is a telephone and a computer/laptop/tablet.

This a great opportunity for solo practitioners, small and medium size law firms (adopt a night), and for those in corporate or government jobs!

Volunteers will receive 1 free pro-bono CLE credit for each two-hour shift completed. The more evenings you volunteer, the more CLE credits you can earn!

Time spent on volunteering for TLC will be submitted by Legal Aid to the State Bar in June 2025.

If you would be interested in helping in July, please email Tara Rosencrance as soon as possible at [email protected]
