This lively cocktail is arguably the most refreshing highball. Try to find Squirt or Jarritos grapefruit soda if you can.

This has become my new signature cocktail this summer. I use Trader Joe's Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice and seltzer instead of the grapefruit soda. The salt rim is the perfect counterpoint.
Everyone loves it.

This is a great drink that's perfect for humid weather. It was a huge hit at our BBQ party. We served it as a punch: Mix 2 six-packs of Sanpellegrino Pompelmo grapefruit soda, 20 oz. seltzer water, two cans frozen Bacardi margarita mix, and about 1/2 of a 750 ml bottle of silver tequila. To make it pink (much more festive!), add 2 tbsp or so grenadine. Taste and adjust if needed. Garnish with sliced rounds of limes and large squares of ice. Put out with ice, lime wedges and salt for guests.

Grapefruit juice can mess up someone with high blood pressure. Not sure if it raises or lowers BP but I see warnings about using grapefruit juice if you take meds for HBP.

Jim, grapefruit and grapefruit juice do not directly affect blood pressure. Instead, they can affect the rate of uptake and metabolism of certain drugs. If a prescription drug doesn't have a specific warning about grapefruit, it shouldn't be a problem.

I prefer to use fresh grapefruit juice and soda water. I find grapefruit soda too sweet (and not as refreshing). For a twist try a Spicy Paloma - infuse tequila (I like Patron Silver for this) with fresh Jalapeño peppers. Delicious!

It's not blood pressure meds that are messed up with grapefruit, it's statins or cholesterol medications and you have to drink a whole bottle of it to affect the meds.

Use tajin in the rim instead of salt! Your welcome...

This works well with Fresca too!

By mistake, I bought San Pellegrino blood orange soda, and used it instead. Maybe it's not a Paloma anymore, but it was delicious, and everyone preferred it over conventional margaritas. May also help out those who have HBP.

This also works very well with gin instead of tequila.

If you prefer rum instead of tequila, its called a Flamingo (being a pink drink, the name works).

I've stumbled upon something similar by experimenting and looking for a less sweet tequila cocktail option. I use fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime, a splash of cranberry and club soda and garnish with fresh mint.

Hi Amy, this made about 25 8-ounce drinks or 1-1/2 gallons.

For a smoky twist find a nice Mezcal to substitute for tequila. Fresh grapefruit juice is the proper way to make a Paloma. If you’re shaking this up at home try this: 1 ounce and 1/2 of Tequila or Mezcal, 3/4 ounce grapefruit juice, 1/2 ounce lime and 1/2 ounce simple syrup or 1 tablespoon raw sugar, then a pinch of nice quality salt into the cocktail before shaking it up. Pour over ice and top with seltzer/sparkling water. Enjoy!

I find that using a mix so San Pelligrino grapefruit soda and a grapefruit based seltzer helps balance out the sugar in the drink but keeps it light and refreshing.

What are the measurements for Tequila and other ingredients?

I'd use Spindrift seltzer, the grapefruit one. It's made with grapefruit juice, nothing artificial, and it's only slightly sweet.

Thank you for sharing the traditional Paloma recipe. I am hoping bartenders are inspired to stop using grapefruit juice and soda water - it is not the same!

I used Fever-tree yeah pink all grapefruit soda, and it was terrific. Not too sweet and not too juicy. Plus it gave it a nice blush color.

didn’t have ingredients as listed BUT used Ting - a Jamaican grapefruit soda and Tanteo - a jalapeno infused tequila. Yum!!

Fever Tree grapefruit soda makes the BEST Paloma!

Yes, here in sweltering AZ this is a breath of fresh air. I do as some of the others have said-I buy Trader Joe's ruby red grapefruit and freeze them into cubes Blend this in the blender-top with a little soda and refreshement is the buzzword of the day.

I use a dash of simple syrup, fresh lime juice.. and swap soda for ginger beer. Very refreshing!

Actually, grapefruit and especially juice, interfere with a number of medications. The one of most concern is statins for high cholesterol. Rosuvastatin is considered a safer option.

Fresh squeez d grapefruit juice and Topochico in place of grapefruit soda for me. Much more refreshing that way, I think.

I used Tres Generation Tequila. Plata or silver variety. Great result.

Instead or the grapefruit flavored soda try it with a healthy splash of real grapefruit juice and then top with topo chico or cloud soda. It’s way better

We usually sub the grapefruit juice with tequila.

A friend's father from Morelos, Mexico taught me to sprinkle salt on the ice first then add lime juice and mix. Add tequila and mix, then top with grapefruit soda. It takes it to a whole new level.

I'm diabetic, so I prefer Fresca.
