I wonder how many poeple understand the incredible system here, amazingly advanced “biotechnology” that depend on flora to provide the cow with nutrients enough in some cases to provide 50 liters milk beside all the other requirements of 500 kg plus body, if you let your self into these wonders it is like floating in the outer space

#Fridayfunfact Ruminants are amazing creatures, but what does being a ruminant mean? Ruminants are ungulates (2-toed) animals that chew a regurgitated cud. In order to chew their cud, they must have a specific type of stomach -- a rumen. Our domesticated ruminants have 1 stomach with 4 awesome compartments. 1. Rumen - The 1st chamber is the biggest and can be bigger than 30 gallons in a mature cow! The rumen has a "shaggy" carpet feel/look with papillae that flow back and forth (think seaweed moving in the ocean). The rumen is filled with "bugs" and has its own ecosystem of bacteria and yeast to break down forages. 2. Reticulum -- This 2nd chamber is a smaller outcropping of the rumen and has "cups" like a honeycomb pattern to catch the food for digestion. 3. Omasum - The 3rd part is a tight basketball shaped compartment in adult cattle with many "pages" of a book. The food weaves back and forth, absorbing water and drying out the ingesta. 4. Abomasum - The 4th compartment is like our human stomach. The ingesta is rehydrated with acid for the final digestion before the intestines. Check out what they look like!

Cattle Foot Rot: ************* Foot rot is an acute and highly infectious disease of cattle characterized by swelling and lameness. This extremely painful condition can become chronic if treatment is not provided, allowing other foot structures to become affected. Foot rot originates between the claws of the hoof In cattle different bacteria are involved in foot rot, the most important one being ✔️Fusobacterium. These bacteria are also present in faeces, which explains why the disease is more common in dirty environment and is also difficult to control. Signs foot-rot cattle ✔️A wound in the inter-digital skin (see picture) becomes infected causing local inflammation ✔️The infection then spreads causing a bigger lesion which becomes smelly and oozes pus ✔️Typically the infection also spreads into the claws and causes separation between the hooves and the bone, the animal stops putting weight on that foot, later the hooves weaken and begin to peel off, pus oozes out which has a foul smell. ✔️Even the joint above the hooves can become infected ✔️The disease causes severe pain, severe lameness, fever, loss of appetite, loss of condition and reduced milk production and may force the owner to cull the animal ✔️Prevention. ⚜️Keep the ground clean and dry, especially in zero grazing(!), you can use saw dust to keep the surface dry ⚜️If you have concrete surface make sure the surface is very even and smooth - uneven and rough concrete surface causes injury to the hooves ⚜️Frequently clean, sweep and scrape hard surfaces free of manure; remove dung and mud from the boma regularly ⚜️Drain areas around drinking troughs, gateways and frequented tracks. ⚜️Trim hooves regularly, any overgrowth should be cut off when you see it, always keep the hooves in normal shape ⚜️Cows with soft hooves are more likely to suffer from foot rot, do not buy or keep offspring from such cows. * Treatment If there is already a large lesion, wash the foot especially the skin between the claws with hot water- as hot as you can put your hand in; then apply an antiseptic solution; cut away or trim any decayed part of the hoof to remove the infection that is underneath it, remove all dead tissue using a clean pen-knife; treat surface with Hydrogen Peroxide 3% and cover with a wound powder/ointment (e.g. copper sulphate in the form of a blue paste); make sure the animal is kept on dry clean surface __________________________________________ Caution: when trimming the hooves inexperienced people may cut too deep causing extra injury - it is very good to watch an experienced stockman trimming hooves and learn from him ✔️After operating on the foot supportive treatment with antibiotics is necessary: good results are obtained with Procaine-Penicillin or Penicillin-Streptomycin IM for 3 days at double the normally recommended dose; long-acting Oxytetracycline also gives good results as does a three day course of Trimethroprim/Sulphadaizine IM

💡 Sharing a pro tip from the dairy farming industry today! 🌟 One thing I've learned from my hands-on experience on the farm is the immense value of utilising internal teat sealants for cows at drying-off. Scientific evidence from around the globe, including the UK, supports their use as it significantly reduces the risk of new infections during the dry period. This applies to all cows, whether they're already infected or not. If internal sealants aren't an option, consider external ones - they require regular application but can still offer some protection. This simple yet effective strategy has helped me maintain healthier cows and a more productive dairy farm. Let's remember, a healthy cow is a happy cow and a happy cow produces more milk. 🐄 Give it a try, and let me know how it has worked for you! Remember, success in dairy farming lies in consistent and preventive healthcare for your herd. 💪 #DairyFarming #FarmLife #HealthyCows #HappyCows
