• Counseling is available to all D.C. area students through Virginia Tech’s Cook Counseling Center. Appointments will be offered in person or via telehealth. 

• TimelyCare
  As part of Virginia Tech's partnership with TimelyMD, students have free, 24/7 access to virtual care services with TimelyCare – the virtual health and well-being platform designed for college students. Students will have access to:
  • Unlimited on-demand mental health support 24/7, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the world, through TalkNow
  • Unlimited access to health coaching, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the world
  • Scheduled counseling sessions, limited to 12 sessions per academic year, available to all Virginia Tech students throughout the United States
  • Register for TimelyCare online or download the app.
• The Student Medical Insurance office assists students with enrolling in Virginia Tech's Student Health Insurance Plan. They also help students clarify the often-confusing language of insurance, navigate local providers, and submit claims. Contact them at [email protected] or 540-231-6226.
  • International students are required to have health insurance either through the Virginia Tech Student Health Insurance Plan or a comparable plan.
  • Domestic students are encouraged, but not required, to have personal health insurance.
• Hokie Wellness strives to educate and empower every Hokie to take an active and engaging day-to-day approach to their wellness. They offer several virtual workshops, connection sessions, and other wellness resources. View the current list of wellness topics.

The Hokie Passport is your official university identification card that permits authorized access to university services and facilities. The Northern Virginia Center Resource Center issues new and replacement Hokie Passports. Students must be currently enrolled to obtain a Hokie Passport. Incoming fall graduate students can submit their Hokie Passport photo online and pick up their ID at the Northern Virginia Center Resource Center during the first week of classes.

The Office of Veteran Services works with the U.S. Department of Veterans Services to process all veteran and military student education benefits documentation. Prospective and current student veterans or military-connected students using Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits should contact the Office of Veteran Services at [email protected] or 540-231-5815 to set up a phone or virtual appointment.

Academic study can sometimes be challenging. If you feel like you need additional help to succeed in your program, several resources are available.

• The Graduate School Ombudsperson is a confidential and informal resource for those facing conflicts or challenges that cause stress in your work here at Virginia Tech. The ombudsperson specializes in conflict resolution and can help you navigate your challenges to gain focus and clarity and move forward constructively. Though based in Blacksburg, they are available to D.C. area students through phone and Zoom meetings. The ombudsperson also travels to the D.C. area periodically for in-person meetings. This office is a great place to start if you are unsure of some viable options and strategies to help alleviate the stress your concern causes. • The Dean of Students office supports and cares for students in crisis and connects students to university and community resources. Students should reach out for help with personal/family emergencies, personal/academic support, emergency financial assistance, Honor System and Student Conduct advising, class absence verification, to report other general complaints, or if you don’t know where to go for help. • Virginia Tech is working toward a community free from sexual harassment and violence. We commit to taking all reports seriously, treating all individuals with compassion and respect, and holding those who perpetrate harassment and violence accountable. To report assault or harassment, visit SAFE at VT for information.
• The Office for Equity and Accessibility promotes a learning and working environment free from harassment and discrimination for employees and students. The office answers questions about the university’s anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies. The D.C. area equity manager works with the Cook Counseling Center, Human Resources, and the Graduate School Ombudsperson to create a robust support network. U-PASS
Virginia Tech partners with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to allow eligible students to participate in the University Pass (U-Pass) Program. U-Pass provides full-time Virginia Tech students in the D.C. metro area with unlimited access to Metrorail and Metrobus throughout the semester. Capital Bikeshare
Virginia Tech has signed on with Capital Bikeshare to offer deeply discounted student membership rates. The discount rate is $25 per year, a significant savings compared to the regular rate of $95. Please refer to the Capital Bikeshare flyer for details on how to sign up and use the discount code vtech4924va.

Many departments at Virginia Tech provide services designed to meet students' academic and learning assistance needs. Utilizing these services allows students to reach their full academic potential and helps them plan for future academic and professional endeavors.

• Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) strives to remove disability-related barriers to maximize access and opportunity for all students. • The Virginia Tech Writing Center is free for all Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff at all levels. Although based in Blacksburg, D.C., area students should use this online appointment request form to schedule a virtual appointment or consultation.
• Academic advising: Contact your faculty advisor or graduate program coordinator  for specific academic advising for your program or major.
• Graduate Teaching Assistants: Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are vital to the university’s learning mission. GTAs can access many teaching resources through the Graduate School, the TLOS Professional Development Network, and the Academy for Graduate Teaching Assistant Excellence, VT-GRATE.

Northern Virginia Resource Center 

The Northern Virginia Resource Center is a branch of the University Libraries and a support center for students and faculty in the D.C. area. Library staff can assist all students with finding resources, accessing collections, and requesting/borrowing materials. Consultations can be provided in person or online. The facility is located on the first floor of the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church and is equipped with group and individual study rooms, research materials, 3D printers, and workstations. Contact the library at [email protected] or 703-538-8340. Students can also reserve a study room in the library using the online reservation system.

WAAC Center Library

The Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center Library in Old Town supports architecture programs in the D.C. area. Note that the library is non-circulating: you may use books within the library or take them to your desk, but you may not take them home.

Interlibrary Loan

Virginia Tech students may access additional books via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Use your VT ILLiad account to request books from the University Libraries catalog or other affiliated libraries. WAAC students can contact Marlene Koenig at [email protected] for more information on creating an account.

Returning borrowed University Library materials

• Materials can be returned at the following locations:
  • Northern Virginia Center: An outdoor book return is available 24/7 near the building's entrance. When the building is open, visitors can return books at the library service desk on the first floor or use the return slot within the orange wall next to the library entrance.
  • VTRC Arlington: The book return is on the 6th floor within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) area. Access requires a key fob or Hokie Passport, available only to faculty and staff who work in the building and students enrolled for in-person classes.
  • Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center: The book return is the gray "mailbox" inside the main entrance. Access to the building requires a key fob available to WAAC faculty, staff, and students.
• You can also use the USPS Prepaid Return Label that came with your request from Interlibrary Loan.
