It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Trevor Burnard, director of the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation at the University of Hull. We had the privilege to know Professor Burnard, not only as an eminent scientist, but also as a remarkable individual. The years of collaboration with him and the Wilberforce Institute were mutually beneficial and enriching in numerous ways. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Impressions from the workshop on “Maroon Ecologies, Maroon Imaginaries” organised by BCDSS postdoctoral researcher Jennifer Leetsch in partnership with Dr. Henry Ivry from the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at University of Glasgow: participants discussed marronage, i.e. the flight from slavery, from a variety of different disciplinary and geographic contexts – ranging from anthropology and geography to sound and literary studies, and from Jamaica to Suriname and Brazil.
