One of our first partners, BNB - Beton und Naturstein Babelsberg, has delivered a series of elegant benches, using expertly crafted concrete with eLM Zero for the bases, beautifully paired with wood for the seating areas. These benches are part of a city initiative aimed at enhancing the visitor experience by providing comfortable resting spots in Potsdam’s picturesque historical center. Each bench features an informative board that shares the history of Potsdam and merges modern design with climate-friendly construction. This past week, we sat down with Stefanie Gerhart, the co-founder of ecoLocked, a Berlin-based climate tech company providing functional, carbon-negative building materials The company recently completed its €4M seed funding round, co-led by climate-focused VCs Matterwave Ventures and Climentum Capital, with participation from existing investors Counteract, SFO, Sabancı Building Solutions, and Voyagers Construction has historically been viewed as an unavoidably high emissions industry, with cement production contributing about 8% of global emissions It’s great to see smart people no longer succumbing to the narrative that nothing can be done to improve this and instead finding solutions Details in comments

𝐄𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐤𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐞𝐋𝐌 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨! 🚀 Dieses Mal konnten wir die gewobau Rüsselsheim zum Bauen mit klimafreundlichem Beton überzeugen. Nach der energieeffizienten Renovierung der Wohngebäude im Hasengrund, Rüsselsheim wurde der Außenbereich mit CO2-armen Pflastersteinen aufgewertet. Diese wurden von unserem Partner Nüdling Betonelemente GmbH mit ecoLocked Materials hergestellt. Dank 𝐞𝐋𝐌 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 wurden in diesem Projekt über 3,6 Tonnen CO2-Äq dauerhaft in den Pflastersteinen gespeichert, wobei das LCA durch unabhändige Prüfer validiert und zertifiziert wurde. Der CO2-Fußabdruck dieser Pflastersteine ist um fast 80% niedriger als bei herkömmlichen Pflastersteinen in Deutschland. 🌱 𝐞𝐋𝐌 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐞𝐫𝐟ü𝐥𝐥𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐞 𝐃𝐈𝐍-𝐄𝐍 1338 & 1339-𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, wodurch es ideal geeignet ist, den CO2-Fußabdruck von Betonprodukten wie Pflastersteinen und Betonplatten, bis auf Netto-Null zu reduzieren. Demand for sand mining for construction materials has 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐝 in the past two decades, reaching a staggering 50 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫.🌍 In Germany alone, 70 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 of sand is used annually for concrete. However, the sand found in deserts is unsuitable for construction due to its smooth, eroded grains. That's why even the iconic skyscrapers of Dubai, a desert city, were built with sand imported all the way from Australia! The environmental impacts of sand mining are significant, leading to: 🌿 Biodiversity loss 🏝️ Land losses 🌊 Increased flooding risks 🚛 Transport emissions and water pollution At ecoLocked, we are dedicated to making a positive impact.
