Faber-Castell was able to achieve a satisfactory business performance in the 2023/24 fiscal year despite increasingly challenging market conditions. The company could maintain a strong return on sales above the pre-Covid level of 19/20, even though these declined slightly compared to the previous financial year. Following the second-best turnover in the company's history in the previous reporting year, the Faber-Castell Group recorded a -4.7% decline in turnover to EUR 618.4 million (previous year: EUR 649.2 million). Even so, profitability remains in the high single-digit range.   "The ‘ONE Faber-Castell’ Group strategy adopted in 2022 is showing initial success in all focus areas thanks to the measures already implemented to increase efficiency." says CEO Stefan Leitz. Do you remember your first writing exercises?   What we write with has a big influence on how we learn. Writing by hand strengthens the memory and therefore enhances the learning process. But digital media, from whiteboards to tablets, also open up new ways of collecting and sharing knowledge.   Denmark has been at the forefront of digitising schools. But now it is taking a step backwards in the use of digital media in the classroom. The Ministry of Education is recommending a more restrictive approach to digital media because it affects pupils' concentration and attention.   Other education policy studies, however, stress that analogue and digital media can complement each other well in the classroom if used in moderation and for the right tasks. While primary school children should do their homework with pen and paper and as little distraction as possible, it is important for teenagers to learn how to do good research online.   In the digital world, which can often seem so disembodied, the connection between brain and hand is still important. Adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine are not spices. As ACGT, these nucleobases are more commonly known as the building blocks of our DNA, and therefore of life itself. A few weeks ago, an interdisciplinary team of scientists, artists, and creatives harnessed this fundamental significance, transcribing the first article of the German constitution into a DNA sequence, which was then processed into a unique ink. This marked the birth of the "DNA of Democracy" campaign, which Faber-Castell supported not only by producing and providing the ink but also with fountain pens from the "Graf von Faber-Castell Collection." While the ink literally contains the DNA of our democracy, the pens bear the abbreviation "GG" for "Grundgesetz" (constitution) on the barrel. With each use, they help spread the core values of our democratic society and economy. Building on this, the same creative minds have launched another initiative: "Demokratie, muss" (i.e. "Democracy, a Necessity"). This striking claim will appear on around 6,000 City Light posters across Germany, accompanied by statements from prominent personalities in politics, culture, sport, business, and science. All are united in their commitment to preserving and protecting our democracy – and with this campaign, they are launching a crowdfunding effort (https://lnkd.in/dFfjyWwn) for a unique book project. Faber-Castell will once again be providing its support. Also once again, Faber-Castell is thus underlining its values such as tolerance, diversity and openness as important components of its economic and social behaviour - and sending a strong signal in favour of democracy to all internal and external stakeholders. Did you know that the first company health insurance fund in Bavaria originated from a pencil factory? ✏️ Yes, you read that right! At Faber-Castell, we have been combining innovation with social commitment for 180 years. 🌟 As a young man, Lothar von Faber took over his father's pencil workshop in Stein and not only turned it into a global company but also acted an industrial pioneer in social responsibility. He set up the first company health insurance fund in Bavaria and ensured that his employees received medical care and financial support. Established in 1844, it was the first company health insurance scheme in Bavaria, one of the oldest in Germany and a model for many others. Only about 40 years later, chancellor Otto von Bismarck passed the ‘Law on Health Insurance for Workers’. From this date onwards, all workers and employees are obliged to take out health insurance. Today, the BKK Faber-Castell & Partner health insurance is open not only for employees, but for almost 100,000 insured persons in Bavaria, thus being a role model for our consistent social commitment inside and outside the company. Today we celebrate World Nature Conservation Day!   Every year on July 28, the aim is to draw attention to the need to protect the various elements of nature, such as flora and water.   Because change needs creativity, we at Faber-Castell have been making an important contribution to the conservation of natural resources for many years.   In the forests we manage in the Brazilian Cerrado, we initiate programmes – such as “Arboris” and “Aqua”– for biodiversity and environmental protection. Today, around a quarter of the forest area we manage in Brazil is dedicated to preserving the native environment, which is home to 467 native tree species from 29 different tree families. This natural reserve has become a biotope for rare animal and plant species.
