🍊 Imagine you’re craving an orange, you go to the supermarket, and smell it … … to decide whether you will buy it. These steps describe human behavior. It is questionable whether devices will ever be able to mimic our sense of smell. What they are capable of, however, is learning by experience – thanks to AI. This is the prerequisite for autonomous IoT device-to-device (D2D) transactions, such as payments. Currently, there is no payment scenario where a human hand isn’t required. In the future, though, IoT devices might be able to identify a need, find a vendor, and initiate a payment fully autonomously. With technology for autonomous settlement and payment already existing, the biggest hurdle lies in autonomous verification. Just as humans rely on networks of trust when interacting with others, devices have to be able to build this trust. Returning to our orange example: How can a device know the orange it ordered is sweet enough – and where to return it if it isn’t? The answer: by machine learning.
