Award winning, internationally renowned visual artist working with BioArt, sculpture, installation, and digital media to explore our relationship to infectious diseases, synthetic biology, AI and robotics.
Setting up my new solo exhibition “The Mutability of Memories and Fates” with curator Claudia Schnugg, Alex May and Ruediger at Saline Hallein in association with Schmiede and subnet. I did 2 press interviews and one radio interview for ORF. The works explore the science of epigenetics and were made in collaboration with the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells at the Helmholtz Munich, with a new prototype of a piece extending the work with the Dept of War Studies, Kings College London. The gallery is part of the old saltworks from which the nearby city of Salzburg gets its name.

📣 #PaperAlert: New findings about air pollution and health risks, published in "The Lancet Planetary Health". 💡 Even when air pollutant concentrations decrease, the health risks posed by these pollutants can remain consistently high. 👉 This is the conclusion of an international study recently conducted under the leadership of Maximilian Schwarz, #HelmholtzMunich. 👉Get more insights: https://lnkd.in/dNEHrHnf #Epidemiology #WHO #AirPollution #EnvironmentalHealth
📣Outdoor #AirPollution is the leading environmental risk factor for #Morbidity and #Mortality. However, reductions in air pollution levels do not necessarily lead to changes in the associated mortality risk. 📄In our new publication, we analyzed global data from 380 cities in 24 countries between 1995 and 2016. We found that while concentrations of particulate matter (#PM2.5 and #PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (#NO2) have decreased over time, the associated risk of death has not changed significantly. These findings demonstrate the complexity of ambient air, especially as factors such as air pollution sources, chemical composition, and sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors might also change over time. 🌍National and international efforts to improve air quality need to be more closely aligned with the more stringent recommendations of the #WorldHealthOrganization, as mitigation measures might be effective near or below these guideline values. The current revision of the #EuropeanUnion's air quality standards would be a good starting point! 💪Many thanks to my colleagues and co-authors at Helmholtz Munich, Prof. Annette Peters, Dr. Alexandra Schneider, and Dr. Susanne Breitner-Busch (née Breitner), as well as to the #MCC Collaborative Research Network around Prof. Antonio Gasparrini for their valuable input and for making this study possible. 🔗Find the full open access publication here: https://lnkd.in/dQc6UVJ4 👉Read the related press release here: https://bit.ly/4edLvlx #Epidemiology #EnvironmentalHealth #WHO #EuropeanCommission #EuropeanEnvironmentAgency

#AirPollution and #Mortality: Persistent #Health Risks Despite Declining Pollutant Levels 🌍 A global study led by #HelmholtzMunich reveals that even as #AirPollution levels drop, health risks remain high. 💡Analyzing data from 380 cities, researchers found that despite reductions in PM10, PM2.5, and NO2 over time, the impact on mortality has barely changed. 🧑🔬Maximilian Schwarz, Helmholtz Munich researcher and the lead author of the study, attributes this finding to various factors: 💬"These include the aging population in many regions, the fact that older people tend to be more health-compromised than younger individuals, and that the sources and composition of air pollutants may have changed. Due to the data available, we were unable to investigate the impact of other potentially relevant pollutants.” These include, for example, ultrafine particles, which are suspected to have a greater impact on human health than larger particles such as PM2.5. 📝The study, published in “The Lancet Planetary Health”, highlights the need for stricter #AirQuality regulations aligned with #WHO guidelines to protect public health. 👉Learn more in our news: https://lnkd.in/dNEHrHnf #HealthRisks #EnvironmentalHealth #ClimateCrisis
